Madurai, Sep 25 — A state-level Transpreneur Summit and Transgender Business Expo held in Madurai on Friday inaugurated a nationwide network for transgender entrepreneurs and announced a package of financial and incubation support to help scale transgender‑led enterprises, organisers said.
Expo showcases 22 enterprises; loans and equipment distributed
The two‑day event brought together 22 business owners from across Tamil Nadu, displaying products and services ranging from organic food and mushroom cultivation to handcrafted textiles, beauty products and publishing. Selected entrepreneurs received loan sanctions under the Pradhan Mantri Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME) scheme and were handed over subsidised equipment orders, organisers said.
- 22 transgender‑led enterprises showcased at the expo.
- Loan sanctions worth about ₹2 lakh were announced for selected entrepreneurs under the PMFME scheme.
- Beverage‑manufacturing machinery and subsidised loan orders were distributed through the District Industries Centre.
Inaugurating the expo, MSME Minister P Mathan Raja emphasised entrepreneurship as a route to dignity and economic independence beyond mere livelihood generation. He urged investors, incubators and consumers to support transgender‑led businesses while asking entrepreneurs to ensure product quality and cultivate repeat customers.
"Entrepreneurship can provide dignity and economic independence beyond creating livelihoods," the minister said, calling for greater industry support and market linkages for transgender enterprises.
Incubation pacts to build capacity and market access
The Transgender Resource Centre (TRC) signed agreements with TSOM Incubation Association and Solamalai Foundation to provide mentorship, capacity building and business development support, TRC executive director Priya Babu said. The partnerships are intended to help entrepreneurs access vital market linkages and strengthen their businesses.
TRC also highlighted the role of community initiatives, noting the presence of Transpublication, which has operated for nine years to give transgender writers a platform to publish literature and document the community’s history.

Local impact and next steps
Organisers said the newly launched trans entrepreneur forum will serve as a platform for collaboration among transgender‑led businesses, enabling them to expand professional networks and access wider markets. The expo displayed a cross‑section of micro and small enterprises, including food processing units, textile artisans and publishing ventures, signalling the diversity of entrepreneurial initiatives within the community.
Officials said follow‑up measures will include facilitating further formal credit linkages, providing technical training through incubators and promoting quality standards to help businesses enter wider retail and institutional markets. The distribution of machinery and formal loan sanctions is expected to assist early‑stage manufacturers and food processors in scaling operations.
While participants welcomed the state and district level support, organisers and attendees underlined that sustained market access, consumer awareness and continuous mentorship will be crucial for long‑term viability and mainstreaming of transgender entrepreneurship in the region.
