Convict shot in broad daylight on Dhabas Road; suspects flee on scooter
JAIPUR — A 50-year-old inmate who had been shifted to the Sanganer open jail was shot dead by two masked assailants on a busy city road on Wednesday evening, police said. The incident took place at about 5:45 pm on Dhabas Road in the Karni Vihar area when the victim was returning to the open jail on his motorcycle.
According to the Jaipur police, the attackers approached the victim on a scooter, manoeuvred to block his path and fired three shots. One bullet pierced the motorcycle helmet and hit the man in the head. He was pronounced dead and his body was sent to SMS Hospital mortuary for post-mortem, the police said.
"We are probing the possibility that Sahay's targeting was in revenge for Gurjar's murder," Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Prashant Kiran said.
Officials identified the deceased as Ganga Sahay, who had been convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in 2022 for the 2018 murder of history-sheeter Mahendra Gurjar in Moti Doongri. Sahay had been moved to the Sanganer open jail in May 2025 after being found to have good behaviour, police added.
Evidence recovered; reconstruction under way
Police teams from Karni Vihar, Bhankrota and Chitrakoot mounted an immediate response and imposed an emergency blockade across the Jaipur commissionerate area, but the assailants remained at large late on Wednesday, the report said.
- Recovered at scene: three empty cartridge cases and a magazine.
- Forensics: An FSL team examined the site to collect evidence and reconstruct the crime.
- CCTV: Footage reportedly shows two suspects riding ahead of the victim before the attack; police are reconstructing events using this material.
Police said they were interrogating individuals linked to the 2018 killing of Mahendra Gurjar as part of the probe into whether the shooting was an act of revenge. Investigation teams have also launched searches to trace the scooter and its riders.

The brazen nature of the attack — on a crowded thoroughfare in early evening — has caused alarm in residential pockets around Karni Vihar, which lie close to the Sanganer corridor linking the city to its open jail. Local residents said the area is typically busy at that hour with commuters and small businesses operating along the route.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Prashant Kiran told reporters that the police were exploring multiple angles in the case, including a possible reprisal related to the victim's earlier conviction. The police recovered the spent cartridges and a magazine at the scene and called in a Forensic Science Laboratory team to process the site and secure additional evidence.
Investigating officers are examining CCTV footage from the vicinity that reportedly shows two masked suspects riding ahead of the deceased's motorcycle before the shooting. The police said they were reconstructing the sequence of events and pursuing leads to identify and apprehend the shooters.
The incident adds to public safety concerns in Jaipur, where attacks on convicted criminals outside prison premises raise questions about security arrangements for inmates shifted to open jails. Authorities did not provide details on any security escort or measures that accompanied the convict during his movement to and from the open jail.
Further updates are expected as forensic findings and interrogation results are compiled. The police said the probe would continue to determine motive, locate the assailants and recover the weapon used in the attack.
