Official response and investigation
Following the accident, local police and residents initiated rescue and relief operations. An inquiry has been launched to determine the exact cause of the crash, police said, and investigations are continuing to establish whether road conditions, vehicle failure, speed, driver error or other factors contributed to the incident.
"Expressing heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu directed the district administration to provide all possible assistance to the affected families," the statement said.
The Chief Minister's office issued the condolence and instructive note on Wednesday, and district authorities were asked to coordinate relief measures for the families of the deceased and to ensure treatment for the injured.
Context: road safety and recent accidents
The accident follows a string of serious road crashes in Himachal Pradesh in recent weeks. On August 8, a passenger bus skidded off the Tissa-Bairagarh road in Chamba district, killing seven people and injuring 11 others, officials said. State authorities have in past attributed many such incidents to narrow mountainous roads, sharp bends, heavy monsoon rains and occasional poor vehicle maintenance.
Local administration sources said that details such as the vehicle type, whether it was privately owned or a contracted service, and the number of people on board at the time of the crash are part of the ongoing probe. Forensic teams and traffic police are expected to examine the scene and the vehicle to gather evidence.
Family impact and next steps
The victims belong to nearby villages in Sirmaur and were returning after performing final rites for a relative. District officials have been instructed to assist the families of the deceased with arrangements and to facilitate hospital care for the injured. Police said compensation, if any, and formalities will be handled as per state procedures.
