Guwahati, Sep 1: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday called on IIT Guwahati to lead a technology-driven transformation of the Northeastern region, urging the institute to convert academic research into practical solutions for industry and society.
Focus on applied research and regional challenges
Speaking at the institute's 33rd foundation day, the chief minister said IIT Guwahati's significance goes beyond academic excellence and represents the aspirations of the people of Assam and the Northeast. He recalled that the demand for an IIT in Assam was a key element in the Assam Accord and noted that the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati was established in 1994, 43 years after the first IIT at Kharagpur.
Sarma said the institute's true contribution will be judged not only by publications and degrees but by its ability to deliver solutions in areas including advanced manufacturing, healthcare, skilling, disaster resilience, urbanisation, agriculture and emerging technologies. He highlighted existing collaborations between the state government and IIT Guwahati as examples of applied work.
“Our young people should not merely witness the arrival of new industries, they should become active participants in the knowledge, technology and supply chains that these industries create,”
Existing projects cited
The chief minister listed several ongoing initiatives linking the state government and IIT Guwahati. These included the Assam Advanced Healthcare Innovation Institute, research in low-field MRI, work on surgical robotics and plant-based therapeutics. He also named programmes in semiconductor skilling, drone-based flood response and use of artificial intelligence for alternative credit assessment of women-led enterprises.

- Industry and skilling: semiconductor skilling to prepare youth for emerging manufacturing sectors.
- Disaster and climate resilience: drone-based flood response and AI-driven solutions for river management and agriculture.
Calls for sustainable urban and infrastructure solutions
Sarma urged IIT Guwahati to contribute to designing flood-resilient infrastructure, scientific river management, climate-resilient agriculture, early-warning systems and improved urban planning. He said that Guwahati and other growing urban centres in the region will need scientific inputs for mobility, public transport, drainage, waste management, energy efficiency and climate resilience.
| Area | Examples cited |

Implications for students and regional industry
The chief minister emphasised that Assam's emerging industrial landscape, notably in semiconductors and advanced manufacturing, will require long-term investment in human capital. He urged that young people in the region should not be passive observers as industries arrive, but should be integrated into the knowledge, technology and supply chains those industries create.
The remarks signal a push to align academic research and technical education in the Northeast with practical industry needs and public challenges. For IIT Guwahati, the expectations underline a broader role: producing workforce-ready graduates, supporting local industry through skilling and applied R&D, and contributing to public-sector solutions for persistent regional issues such as floods and urban services.
How IIT Guwahati responds to this call — by expanding translational research, building industry partnerships, and scaling skilling programmes — will shape the region's capacity to absorb and benefit from upcoming technological investments. The chief minister's address linked institutional reputation to tangible outcomes for citizens, stressing measurable impact in both social and industrial spheres.
