Sukna (near Siliguri), August 22: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday convened a meeting with senior West Bengal and central security officials to review arrangements along the nation’s eastern frontiers, with particular emphasis on bolstering defences around the Siliguri Corridor — the narrow Chicken’s Neck land link that joins the Northeast with mainland India, officials said.
Focus on coordination and surveillance
The discussion, held in Sukna on the third and final day of the Home Minister’s visit to the State, brought together senior officers of the Border Security Force (BSF) and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) as well as representatives from state police, intelligence agencies and civil administration, according to official accounts. The meeting concentrated on enhanced border surveillance, improved inter-agency coordination and a framework to set up a “Triangular Security Grid” to secure the Chicken’s Neck area.
"The Siliguri Corridor is one of the most sensitive areas that connects eight States and is crucial to national security. We have prepared a triangular grid comprising three new military garrisons at Dhubri in Assam, Kishanganj in Bihar and Chopra in West Bengal," Mr. Shah had said at an SSB event in Siliguri on August 21, officials said.
Officials said the choice of Sukna for the meeting underlined Siliguri’s strategic position close to the international borders with Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh. The corridor’s narrow geography and its role as the principal land link for India’s Northeastern States were cited as key reasons for the concentrated review.
Elements of the proposed grid
Based on official statements, the Triangular Security Grid will centre on three new military garrisons positioned to create layered defence and quicker operational response in the Chicken’s Neck area. The locations named by the Home Minister are:

Separate reporting indicated that West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari attended related security deliberations in Siliguri, and the Home Minister had also met local elected representatives and community leaders earlier in the day, according to regional reports. Those accounts said representatives of the Gorkha community had also been engaged in talks that will lead to a committee to examine their demands, with an interlocutor named to lead the process.
Prameya News reported that BJP MPs who were part of the meetings emphasised the need to resist any attempts to divide North Bengal from the rest of the State and flagged security threats to the corridor as a primary concern. The Home Minister’s extended presence in Siliguri — and the sequence of briefings and consultations — reflects the national-level focus on the area’s strategic vulnerabilities, the reports indicated.

For residents of Siliguri and neighbouring hill and Terai tracts, the proposed measures could mean increased troop presence, more check-points and enhanced technology-based surveillance in border-adjacent zones. Administrative coordination between district authorities and central forces is likely to be intensified as arrangements for the garrisons and the grid are worked out, officials said.
