Kolkata: Industrialist Gautam Adani on Thursday pledged to invest more than ₹1 lakh crore in West Bengal over the coming decade, signalling a large-scale push into sectors ranging from ports and logistics to healthcare and data infrastructure, according to PTI and press reports.
Broad portfolio across infrastructure and culture
Speaking at an event organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce in Kolkata, Adani said the eastern region must lead India’s next phase of economic expansion and described Bengal as strategically placed to serve growing markets in Southeast Asia and the Indo-Pacific via the Bay of Bengal, PTI reported.
The group’s proposed investments, he said, would include development in:
- ports and deep‑sea logistics,
- power generation, transmission and distribution,
- roads, bridges and ropeways,
- green cement manufacturing,
- hyperscale data centres,
- healthcare — notably a 2,000‑bed hospital in New Town.
Adani announced the foundation stone for the Adani Arogya Mandir, a proposed 2,000‑bed facility in New Town that the group said will include medical research and education components. Press reports state the hospital is being built at an estimated cost of over ₹4,000 crore, and that half the beds are earmarked for patients unable to pay for care.
"For India’s next trillion dollars of growth, the East must rise. This is where Bengal becomes essential to fulfil the vision of Viksit Bharat," Adani said, according to PTI.
Local cultural and heritage commitments
Beyond hard infrastructure, the group also signalled support for cultural and heritage projects. Announcements reported by the press include backing for the restoration of the historic Writers' Building, funding for curated Durga Puja programmes to showcase Bengal’s artisans internationally, and revitalisation of Kumartuli Ghat along the Hooghly.
The twin thrust of industrial and cultural investment comes amid a politically charged environment following the state government change earlier this year. Telegraph reports noted the public ceremony included the presence of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and top state officials, who welcomed the proposed investment as significant for the new administration.
What was formally announced and what remains to be finalised
| Area | Reported commitment / development |
|---|---|
| Overall investment | Over ₹1 lakh crore in Bengal by 2035 (group pledge) |
| Healthcare | Adani Arogya Mandir — 2,000 beds; estimated cost > ₹4,000 crore |
| Infrastructure | Ports, logistics, power, roads, bridges, ropeways, green cement, hyperscale data centres |
| Cultural/heritage | Writers' Building conservation; curated Durga Puja support; Kumartuli Ghat revitalisation |
At the same time, the announcements consist largely of broad commitments and memoranda of understanding. Specific project sites, timelines for most individual developments, land acquisition status, regulatory clearances and detailed employment projections were not released in the statements cited by PTI and the press.
Economic and civic implications for Bengal
If realised, the investments would reshape parts of Bengal’s industrial landscape. Observers note the state’s geographic adjacency to mineral belts in Jharkhand, Odisha and Chhattisgarh, and its maritime access via the Bay of Bengal, present logistical advantages that investors regard as complementary to export and regional trade ambitions.
City planners and policy experts will watch whether the projects move beyond commitments to signed contracts, environmental clearances, financing arrangements and construction starts. For Kolkata and the rapidly expanding New Town suburb, the hospital and data centre projects could mean new employment centres and pressure on civic services such as water, transport and urban utilities.
State-level officials and the Adani Group are expected to work out detailed implementation schedules in follow-up meetings. PTI and other reports indicate two memoranda of understanding were signed with the Bengal government during the visit, covering restoration of Writers' Building and support for Durga Puja programming.
For now, the announcements mark a high-profile pledge of capital and a symbolic signal of intensified industry interest in eastern India. How much translates into ground-level construction, jobs and services will unfold in the months ahead as project plans are firmed up and statutory approvals progress.
