Local app aims to tame a familiar camping headache
Sudbury software engineer Ty Ruetz plans to launch a mobile application this autumn that he says addresses one of camping’s most common frustrations: who brings what. The app, called Packplexity, will be available on Oct. 12 for both iPhone and Android devices and is built around shared, assignable packing lists for groups.
Ruetz developed the idea after more than one real‑world mishap. On a trip to Massasauga Provincial Park with high‑school friends, miscommunication in a group chat meant a large canister of stove fuel was never brought. The result was four nights with minimal fuel, a switch to conserving supplies and improvising meals over a campfire.
“It makes the highlight reel of our mishaps for sure,” Ruetz said.
The app’s origin story also includes a more recent, closely held family experience. Ruetz and his wife, Roya, started camping with their toddler and found packing required more planning than they expected. Roya tended to prepare detailed spreadsheets well in advance, while Ruetz often relied on last‑minute notes on his phone — a mismatch that sometimes left them short on essentials such as a dog towel, raincoats for the toddler or a long enough extension cord.
Those differences informed Packplexity’s design. The product uses group lists so items can be assigned to specific people, and incorporates workflow improvements identified during testing. Roya acted as a quality‑assurance tester during development and helped refine the user experience by spotting details the builder missed.
“I think I see things with my blinders on a little bit because I'm building it,” Ruetz said. “But once Roya started using it she was picking out all those details and helping me make things a little more streamlined.”

Packplexity extends the simple packing‑list concept into a tool geared to groups: family outings, friends’ trips or multi‑party excursions where assumptions about who is bringing shared gear can cause problems. According to Ruetz, users can create lists, assign items to individuals and track whether an item has actually been packed.
