Retail and groceries
Most major grocery chains will not be open on Labour Day. That includes Sobeys, Atlantic Superstore, Costco and Walmart. Liquor and beer access will be mixed: NSLC locations will be closed, while private outlets such as Beer Market and WestSide Beer Wine Spirits will remain open.
Smaller, independent shops offer options for last‑minute needs. The city’s sources confirmed that outlets like Gateway Meat Market in Dartmouth and Kingswood Market in Hammonds Plains will be open.

To ease mobility, the municipality has announced that parking will be free all day on the holiday Monday.

City offices and libraries will be closed on Sept. 7. Residents seeking assistance by phone should note that 311 will handle only urgent calls during the holiday.
There will be no regular curbside waste collection on Labour Day. The city says curbside pickups normally scheduled for Monday, Sept. 7 have been moved up to Saturday, Sept. 5, so residents should ensure bins are out early.

Recreation and waterfront
Municipally run recreation centres will be closed for the holiday. However, some outdoor and seasonal facilities remain available: the Halifax Common Pool will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Several splash pads — including Bayers‑Westwood, George Dixon, Isleville Street, Cole Harbour, Shirley’s, Westmount, Sackville and BLT — will be open for the day.
Seasonal outdoor facilities are winding down for the year. All beaches and the Bedford and Cole Harbour outdoor pools are closed for the season.
