Mayor visits multiple sites as the city accelerates road rehabilitation

Polokwane Executive Mayor Cllr John Mpe on Wednesday inspected progress on the city’s wide-ranging road rehabilitation programme and used the visit to hand over new vehicles and equipment intended to bolster municipal operations, the Polokwane Municipality said.

The inspection is part of what the municipality described as

"one of the municipality’s largest road rehabilitation and expansion projects"
aimed at improving road safety, easing congestion and providing more durable infrastructure for future needs.

Work is under way across several parts of Polokwane and neighbouring townships, with resurfacing, widening and related civil works visible at multiple sites. The municipality said rehabilitation started on Voortrekker Street on 28 July, and other streets listed for upgrades span the city centre, residential suburbs and Seshego.

Streets currently being upgraded

The municipality provided a list of streets where rehabilitation is under way. Among those named in Polokwane Central and suburbs are:

  • Polokwane Central: Dorp, Burger, Voortrekker, Oost, Compensatie, Jorissen and Landdros Mare
  • Flora Park: Macdonald, Knox, Jasmyn, Katjepiering and Euphorbia
  • Nirvana: Jaipur, Monsoon and Istanbul
  • Westenburg: Leon, Coverdale, Kelly and Mohamed
  • Ladanna: Veldspaat, Dendron/Witklip, Pietersburg, Emerald, Bulawayo, Railway, Lood, Mika and Fosfaat
  • Seshego: Thaba Chueu, River Cross, Alf Makaleng, 68th Avenue, Zone 1 Extension, Solomon Mahlangu, Lefi, Johane, Mateo, Khudu, Marabe, 54th and 67th Streets

The municipality is also upgrading the important link between the R71/Paledi Mall, Mankweng Hospital and the University of Limpopo into a four-lane carriageway, the statement said. The expansion is intended to improve traffic flow and to serve growing transport demand in the Mankweng–Polokwane corridor.

Vehicles and equipment handed over to bolster operations

During the site visit, Mayor Mpe handed over new assets to municipal teams. The municipality said the items were handed over to strengthen on-the-ground capacity for maintenance and landscaping operations.

Asset Quantity
22-wheeler truck 1
Tractors (for grass cutting) 2
Double-cab bakkies 3

Photographs released by the municipality showed the 22-wheeler truck and the tractors being positioned for handover. The municipality said the tractors are destined primarily for grass-cutting and verge maintenance, tasks that affect visibility and road safety across the city.

What this means for residents

Municipal officials told the Citizen the programme aims to reduce potholes, improve traffic movement and deliver longer-lasting surfaces across arterial and residential streets. For residents, the upgrades could mean smoother commutes, fewer vehicle repairs from damaged road surfaces and improved pedestrian safety where sidewalks and crossings are being renewed.

At the same time, residents should expect temporary disruptions. The municipality has already implemented partial closures on some routes and advised motorists to obey temporary signage and traffic diversion instructions while works continue.

Local commuters and business owners in affected areas will be watching closely for completion timelines and for measures to manage traffic during peak hours. The municipality did not provide a full project completion schedule in the materials released with the site visit report.

Monitoring delivery and transparency

With large-scale civil works and new fleet acquisitions, the effective use of these resources will be important for public confidence. The municipality said the handover is intended to strengthen operational readiness so crews can maintain rehabilitated roads and respond to emergencies more efficiently.

Residents seeking more information or concerned about specific streets can contact the municipal customer service centre or their ward representatives for updates and timelines, the municipality advised in its statement reported by the Citizen.

As work continues across Polokwane and Seshego, the upgrades form part of broader efforts to modernise the city's transport network and support economic activity by improving access and safety for drivers, pedestrians and public transport users.
