The City of McAllen earned national and international recognition this month, collecting 36 awards from the International Festivals & Events Association’s IFEA/Haas & Wilkerson Pinnacle Awards and securing a spot among only seven cities worldwide named a 2026 World Festival & Event City.
Recognition on an international stage
The Pinnacle Awards were announced Oct. 5 at the IFEA’s 71st Annual Convention & Expo in Tucson, Arizona. The program honors excellence in event production, marketing, operations and community engagement. McAllen’s honors spanned multiple departments and signature programs, reflecting work by city staff and partners to produce year-round cultural and community events.
“To hear McAllen’s name be called among festival and event leaders from around the world was a truly special moment,” said Assistant City Manager Elvira Alonzo. “Each award reflects the heart, dedication and countless hours our teams and partners pour into bringing people together. Seeing that work recognized on an international stage fills us with pride.”
Local programs highlighted
Quinta Mazatlán, McAllen’s nature and birding center, led the local prize tally with an impressive collection of honors, taking home eight Gold Awards. The center was singled out for programs that connect the community with nature, promote sustainability and advance environmental education. Specific Gold Awards for Quinta Mazatlán included:
- Best Green Program for Planta Nativa
- Best Educational Program for ReFest
- Best Overall Entertainment Program for Thursday Night Live
- Best Children’s Programming
Quinta Mazatlán also received a Silver Pinnacle Award for Monarch Fest, in recognition of its efforts to raise awareness about monarch butterflies and conservation.
Another high-profile winner was the McAllen Holiday Parade, which received multiple Gold Awards and additional honors for its production and community impact. The parade has been identified as Texas’ largest illuminated holiday and helium balloon parade, a marquee event in the city’s calendar.
What this means for McAllen
City officials say the awards underscore McAllen’s ability to produce well-managed, creative events that draw residents and visitors. Recognition from the IFEA can bolster the city’s tourism and marketing efforts by validating the quality of local festivals and programs when communicating with potential visitors, sponsors and regional partners.
Locally, these honors also highlight institutions and staff whose work supports arts education, environmental stewardship and family-friendly entertainment. For groups that rely on volunteer labor, community partnerships and grant funding, international recognition can help when applying for support or pitching new initiatives.
| Entity | Notable Awards | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Quinta Mazatlán | 8 Gold Awards; Silver for Monarch Fest | Recognition for educational, green and entertainment programming |
| McAllen Holiday Parade | Multiple Gold Awards | Acknowledged for production and community impact |

City leaders celebrated the honors as a reflection of ongoing efforts to position downtown and cultural assets as community gathering places. Officials said the awards are the product of collaboration among city departments, nonprofit partners and local volunteers who organize and operate events across the calendar year.
With the IFEA Pinnacle Awards now public, McAllen joins a small group of municipalities around the globe recognized in 2026 for outstanding festival and event programming. City officials, event producers and local businesses will likely use the momentum from these honors in promotional material and future planning as McAllen seeks to expand its cultural footprint regionally.
