Man in dark clothing observed peering through windows, tried locked door twice
Coral Springs police arrested an 18-year-old man this week after daycare staff reported he peered through windows and attempted to open a locked entrance while children were inside the facility, according to an arrest affidavit released by the department.
Investigators identified the suspect as Nikolas Gabriel Alonso, 18, and say video surveillance and electronic-monitoring data placed him at Kids in Motion Daycare on two separate occasions Aug. 3. Police were summoned to the daycare after the director reported a suspicious person outside the business who had looked into windows and pulled on the front door.
The affidavit states the man first approached the building and inspected the windows, then tried the locked front door. About 40 minutes later, he returned and repeated the behavior, again testing the door handle and looking inside.
“No.”
The citation documents that when the daycare director stepped outside to speak with the man and attempted to photograph him, he replied, “No,” and ran away on foot. Staff told police they did not recognize him and said his actions raised concerns about his intent, given that children were present inside the facility.
Evidence includes surveillance footage and GPS monitoring
Police reviewed the daycare’s surveillance recordings and reported footage that corroborated the director’s account — showing the suspect checking the windows and trying the door on both visits. Officers also examined electronic-monitoring GPS data tied to Alonso, which investigators say matched the location and times of the two incidents.
The affidavit notes officers believed Alonso’s clothing was notable because he was dressed in a black hooded sweatshirt and black pants despite daytime temperatures near 92 degrees in Coral Springs on the day in question. At the time of the arrest, Alonso already was under pretrial electronic monitoring in an unrelated case involving alleged loitering and prowling, according to investigators.
Charges and community response
Alonso was taken into custody on Aug. 5 following the investigation. Records indicate he faces charges tied to the attempted entries; police say the front door remained locked and the suspect never gained access to the daycare.
