ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Strong thunderstorms swept across Alexandria Monday afternoon, producing a sequence of weather alerts and prompting guidance for boaters and residents as forecasters tracked fast-moving, wind-prone storms.
Warnings, watches and observed conditions
The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Alexandria during the afternoon; at one point forecasters reported storms moving east at about 40 mph with a history of producing wind damage. Later in the afternoon, the service upgraded a marine warning for the tidal Potomac after measured gusts exceeded 48 knots (roughly 55 mph).
- Severe thunderstorm warning for the city in effect during the afternoon (expired later as storms moved east).
- Severe Thunderstorm Watch 555 covered parts of the Washington region and included Alexandria; it was canceled early at 5:35 p.m., well before its scheduled 9 p.m. expiration.
- Special marine warning raised for the Potomac after observed wind gusts above 48 knots and reports of small hail.
Forecasters told boaters to move to safe harbor immediately, warning that people could easily be thrown overboard and that vessels could capsize or suffer significant damage.
Local impacts and utility status
As of about 5:32 p.m., Dominion Energy reported a small outage in Alexandria: 15 customers were without power on Stonebridge Road, the only outage reflected on the utility’s map at that time. The cause and restoration time were listed as pending and a crew had not yet been assigned.
Both severe thunderstorm warnings issued for Alexandria earlier in the afternoon had expired by early evening as the line of storms continued eastward. The National Weather Service narrowed the footprint of Watch 555 during the afternoon from a much larger area to a smaller set of counties and localities before canceling it.
What residents should know
The most serious immediate threats from the storm line were damaging wind gusts, small hail over water and localized outages. Authorities advised:
- Boaters: seek safe harbor immediately when a marine warning is issued.
- Motorists: be cautious of sudden wind gusts and possible debris on roadways during and after storms.
- Residents: prepare for brief outages and avoid downed power lines; report outages to Dominion Energy.
