Rail accident investigators are at the site of a derailment near Lewes after a Southern service carrying roughly 150 people left the tracks on Thursday, leaving two passengers seriously injured and a further 18 hurt.
Immediate disruption for commuters and weekend travellers
Southern Rail has said trains between London Victoria and Eastbourne will be cancelled over the weekend because the line between Haywards Heath and Lewes is closed in both directions indefinitely. Stations at Cooksbridge and Plumpton will also not be served; rail replacement buses are operating instead.
The operator has advised people travelling to Eastbourne – which is expecting large numbers for the Airbourne air show this weekend – to use the coastal route via Brighton. Southern has also urged commuters planning to travel on Monday to check for updates on its website on Sunday evening.
Investigation under way
Inspectors from the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) are at the scene gathering evidence. Their work includes examining infrastructure and reviewing CCTV, signalling and train data, the RAIB and the operator have said.
Three carriages came off the tracks when the 14:24 BST Southern service from London Victoria to Eastbourne derailed. Police said that although two people sustained serious injuries and 18 others were hurt, none of the casualties suffered life-threatening injuries.
- Train: Southern 14:24 BST London Victoria to Eastbourne
- Passengers on board (approx): 150
- Carriages derailed: three
- Injuries: 2 serious, 18 others (none life-threatening according to police)
- Line affected: Haywards Heath to Lewes (closed both directions)
"I just remember looking around and seeing so much panic and fear in so many people's eyes," said one passenger, who described the carriage as "bumping up and down and then jostling from side to side like a seesaw" before evacuation.
Several passengers reported being trapped before they were evacuated on to the track, and images from the scene show people being led clear of the train. The emergency response included police and medical teams; local services remain engaged while the immediate scene is secured for investigators.
Local consequences and travel advice
For many in Lewes and surrounding villages the closure will be felt across the weekend and into next week. Commuters who normally use the London Victoria–Eastbourne route will need to plan alternative journeys, allow extra time for onward travel and follow Southern's updates.
| Impact | Detail |
|---|---|
| Weekend cancellations | Services between London Victoria and Eastbourne cancelled |
| Stations not served | Cooksbridge, Plumpton (all weekend) |
| Replacement travel | Rail replacement buses in operation; coastal route via Brighton recommended to Eastbourne |
Investigators from the RAIB will need time to examine the track and the train data before the line can be reopened. That work — and the requirement to ensure the infrastructure is safe — is the main reason given for the indefinite nature of the closure. Local officials and the operator have not given a timescale for when full services will resume.
Residents and passengers seeking the latest information should check Southern's official channels and the RAIB updates. For people due to travel to Eastbourne this weekend, particularly for the Airbourne event, alternative routes and extra journey time should be expected.
As investigation continues, the focus locally is on supporting those affected and restoring a vital rail link that many in Lewes depend on for work and leisure. The RAIB's findings will be closely watched for any lessons that could affect operations across the network.
