Club adopts meerkat branding for season opener
Crewe Alexandra will be temporarily known as Crewe Alexsandr for the opening week of the EFL season as part of a new, league-wide partnership with insurance comparison site Compare the Market.
The change coincides with the club’s first fixture of the new campaign, an away match against Crawley Town. The company’s well-known meerkat character, rebranded for the tie-up as Aleksandr, will take a prominent role in the club badge used for matchday promotions. The meerkat and former Crewe striker Dean Ashton were pictured fitting a fresh sign at the Mornflake Stadium showing the altered identity.
The EFL says the arrangement aims to reward fans and highlight what fandom means across clubs and communities in the league. Supporters of Crewe and the other 71 EFL clubs will be able to access exclusive rewards and be entered into monthly prize draws through the Compare the Market app.
"We're so proud to become a partner of the EFL and have the privilege to be able to support and celebrate the communities who make football so special," said Tom Wallis, Chief Customer Officer at Compare the Market.
The partnership will run across all 72 clubs and the opening week promotion places the meerkat at the forefront of the EFL conversation. Compare the Market said it had enjoyed working with Crewe to launch the campaign, while Ashton — who scored 74 goals in 177 appearances for Crewe between 2000 and 2005 — welcomed the move as a way to capture supporters’ enthusiasm.
"Compare the Market is tapping into what fans care about, and there are going to be lots of fun moments to come, starting with the renaming of my beloved Crewe Aleksandr to kick things off!" Ashton said.
What this means in Crewe
For local supporters the rebrand will be visible on matchday materials and some club signage during the promotional period. The presence of a national brand on Crewe’s badge, even briefly, will be a talking point among fans used to the club’s long-standing identity. It also demonstrates how commercial partners and the EFL are seeking to build engagement beyond the football pitch, with offers and prize draws intended to reach communities as well as matchgoers.
Club legends taking part in the launch will help the campaign resonate locally. Ashton’s involvement links the pronouncement back to Crewe’s recent history on the field and gives a familiar face to the promotion.

Local reaction will likely be mixed. Supporters often treat the club badge and name as sacrosanct, while others will see the promotion as a harmless boost that brings extra attention — and potential rewards — to fans. Whatever the view, the initiative is one of several recent examples of commercial partners seeking creative engagement with EFL clubs.
For Crewe, the week will be notable: the team begins its league campaign with a branded flourish and national marketing support behind it. How long the altered branding remains in local consciousness will depend on how visible the campaign proves to be in the town and how supporters respond on matchday and through the club’s channels.
The EFL and Compare the Market have framed the move as celebrating communities across the league. For Crewe, a club with a proud local identity and a history of producing players who move up the game, it is a reminder that football now combines tradition with commercial partnerships designed to expand fan engagement across new platforms.
