Citywide Dasara festival to blend spirituality, culture and commerce
Vijayawada Utsav Season 2 will return this Dasara as a 10-day cultural festival running from October 11 to 20, organisers said, timed to coincide with the annual celebrations at the Sri Durga Malleswara Swamy Varla Devasthanam on Indrakeeladri. The festival, promoted under the theme "One City, One Celebration," aims to combine spiritual tourism with cultural programming and family entertainment.
The curtain-raiser for the event was held recently at Dr B R Ambedkar Kala Vedika, bringing together government officials, public representatives, artists and cultural performers who offered a preview of planned programmes. Organisers unveiled the festival logo, promotional material and a lineup of attractions intended to draw devotees, tourists and art lovers to the city during Navratri.
Venues and programming highlights
The organisers have designated the Punnami Ghat on the Krishna riverfront as the festival's main cultural hub, while additional programmes will be staged at Makineni Basava Punnaiah Stadium and several other city locations. Announced attractions include classical and folk music and dance, devotional events, celebrity concerts, Dandiya nights, mega carnivals, food festivals, exhibitions, fireworks and family-oriented entertainment.
- Punnami Ghat: Primary venue for cultural performances and evening events.
- Makineni Basava Punnaiah Stadium: Intended for larger-scale shows and stadium events.
- Citywide sites: Multiple smaller programmes across Vijayawada to engage neighbourhoods and visitors.
Organisers described the festival as a "unique blend of spirituality and culture" designed to ensure pilgrims visiting the Kanaka Durga temple can experience the city's wider cultural offerings.
National Saras Mela to run alongside Utsav
Complementing the Utsav, a National Saras Mela will be held from October 8 to 23, showcasing products by self-help groups and artisans from across India. Organisers said the mela is expected to provide a platform for rural entrepreneurs and enhance the visitor experience during the Dasara season.
| Event | Dates | Main Venue(s) |
|---|---|---|
| National Saras Mela | October 8–23 | City exhibition spaces |
| Vijayawada Utsav Season 2 | October 11–20 | Punnami Ghat; Makineni Basava Punnaiah Stadium; other city sites |
Economic and cultural aims
Officials and event backers positioned the festival as a way to raise Vijayawada's profile as both a pilgrimage destination and a centre for cultural tourism. The organisers said the event is expected to draw lakhs of devotees, tourists and art enthusiasts, and to provide livelihood opportunities for local performers and vendors during the busy Navratri period.
Alongside entertainment programming, the festival schedule includes dedicated showcases of traditional and folk art forms. The organisers highlighted efforts to present endangered or lesser-known practices to broader audiences and to create market access for artisans and self-help groups through the Saras Mela.
Logistics and public expectations
While detailed daily schedules and ticketing arrangements are to be announced, organisers emphasised that multiple sites across the city will host events to distribute crowds during peak days of temple visits and public celebrations. The combination of religious observance at the Kanaka Durga temple and the Utsav's cultural offerings aims to encourage longer visitor stays and greater local spending.
Residents and visitors are advised to watch for published schedules and guidance on parking, traffic diversions and public transport during the festival period as authorities finalise arrangements.
Organisers described Vijayawada Utsav Season 2 as an opportunity to project the city's cultural identity more widely and to turn the Dasara season into a coordinated civic celebration.
