Creative context and early critical response
Vibe, directed by and starring Kunal Kemmu, also features Sparsh Shrivastava, Vanshika Dhir and Preity Zinta. The film opened to generally positive notices on release on September 18 and has been noted for its casting and pace. An excerpt from Screen’s review highlighted the director’s casting choices and improvement over his debut, saying:
“In a smart move, Kemmu surrounds himself with real actors... This is his second directorial outing, and he makes up for his lax lapses in his debut, ‘Madgaon Express’ by keeping everything zippy.”
Daayra, directed by Meghna Gulzar, is a crime thriller led by Prithviraj Sukumaran and Kareena Kapoor Khan. The film’s larger opening in certain urban pockets, particularly Bengaluru, suggests strong regional interest despite a lower overall two-day tally compared with Vibe.
What the numbers indicate
Early weekend behaviour — higher night occupancies and stronger second-day growth for both films — points to word-of-mouth and evening audiences playing a significant role in shaping first-weekend outcomes. Vibe’s sharper Day 2 jump and marginally higher city occupancies in multiple centres gave it an edge in the opening weekend race so far, while Daayra’s sizeable turnout in specific markets like Bengaluru suggests it could sustain through targeted urban circuits.
Industry trackers will monitor weekday hold, expansion in show counts and audience demos to determine whether either film can convert early momentum into longer runs. For now, Vibe leads the two-film encounter after two days, with both titles showing improved business on Saturday compared with opening day numbers, Sacnilk reported.
