The Solapur district’s kharif crop is facing a severe crisis after a significant shortfall in monsoon rainfall, the district agriculture department has said in a preliminary report to the commissionerate. Farmers have sown crops on 337,968 hectares this season, but with only 62 percent of the expected rains having arrived by end‑August, sowed fields are drying up and large areas are showing stress.
The department’s report, shared with the administration and flagged for an imminent review meeting with the district collector, lists major crops under threat as soybean, maize, tur, urad and moong. Officials warned that prolonged dry spells — continuous gaps of 30 to 40 days without rain in parts of the district — have already caused wilting on lighter soils and early withering in many areas.
