Long delays after dumper failure at Fatima Nagar choke Solapur highway
Solapur/Maharashtra — A Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) garbage dumper broke down at the Fatima Nagar signal on Wednesday morning, causing traffic to slow to a crawl on the Solapur highway and several adjoining roads for over an hour, officials said. The breakdown affected cars, two-wheelers and ambulances, which were seen moving at a snail’s pace even during late-morning and early-afternoon hours that are not usual peak times.
Deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Sandeep Bhajibhakre said the mechanical failure at the signal was the immediate cause.
"A garbage dumper broke down at Fatima Nagar signal which caused delay in traffic movement,"he said, adding that even a single vehicle breakdown can set off panic and haphazard overtaking that prolongs congestion.
The slowdown was reported along the BT Kawade Road, Prince of Wales Drive and the roads leading towards and out of Hadapsar and surrounding areas. Traffic police were deployed at key signals and volunteers assisted in clearing vehicles, but the movement remained slow for several hours, officials said.

Traffic stress on BT Kawade Road was exacerbated by a separate infrastructure problem. Wanowrie traffic division inspector Sangeeta Jadhav said the road running alongside the canal on BT Kawade Road has been closed for four days by the Wanowrie zonal office of the Municipal Corporation after the canal walls collapsed at several places.
According to Jadhav, the canal runs at full capacity and the collapse has caused the adjacent road to cave in. The Bhairoba Nala passes beneath the canal through an underpass; where the canal wall has completely collapsed in several places, the adjacent road is gradually eroding and subsiding. To avoid a mishap among motorists, the PMC chief engineer ordered the road closure, she said.

A joint site inspection was held on Wednesday by municipal ward officer Amol Pawar and an irrigation department section officer identified as Savita, officials said. The inspection was intended to assess the damage and plan remedial action; details of any immediate repair schedule were not provided in the report received by police.
Traffic authorities warned that when an alternate route is already under stress, even a single obstruction can cause long delays. Bhajibhakre emphasised that sudden braking and attempts at risky overtaking by motorists contribute to prolonged jams after a breakdown.
The collapse of the canal wall and the subsequent closure of the canal-side road have shifted more traffic to parallel routes, increasing congestion near Sopan Baug and other localities. Motorists were urged to exercise patience and follow directions from traffic police at signals and intersections until permanent repairs are carried out by municipal and irrigation authorities.
Local commuters said the combination of the dumper failure and the pre-existing canal-side closure turned what would otherwise have been a short delay into several hours of slow movement. Officials said further assessments are pending to determine timelines for structural repair and safe reopening of the closed road.
