Maharashtra: Solapur Division cleared for signalling modernisation

Solapur, Maharashtra — Indian Railways has approved the installation of computer-based electronic interlocking systems at seven stations in the Solapur Division of Central Railway, according to an official government release dated 19 September 2026. The works are part of a broader signalling modernisation programme on high-density routes and are valued at ₹209 crore.

What is being upgraded

The approved package covers the following locations on the High Density Network Route 7 in and around Solapur:

  • Mohol
  • Mundhewadi
  • Bale
  • Solapur
  • Hotgi Junction – Hotgi A Cabin
  • Shahabad
  • Wadi Junction

The programme will replace conventional relay-based signalling equipment with electronic interlocking, a computer-based system that controls points and signals and permits more precise management of train movements. The government release says the upgrades will also support deployment of advanced traffic-management systems, including Kavach, automatic block signalling and centralised traffic control.

"The approved works cover Mohol, Mundhewadi, Bale, Solapur, Hotgi Junction-Hotgi A Cabin, Shahabad and Wadi Junction on the High Density Network Route 7," the release said.

Expected benefits for passengers and freight

Indian Railways said the modern systems will strengthen signalling operations across the section and improve operational reliability on one of the country’s busy rail corridors. Electronic interlocking enables faster fault detection and rectification, simplifies maintenance and permits smoother handling of higher train frequencies.

Kavach, India’s indigenous automatic train protection system, is included in the wider rollout envisaged for the corridor. The system is designed to reduce the risk of collisions by automatically applying brakes if a driver fails to respond to warnings, thereby enhancing passenger safety on mixed-traffic routes that handle both long-distance express and freight services.

Investment and broader context

The ₹209 crore approval for the Solapur Division is part of Indian Railways’ ongoing drive to expand digital and automated systems across high-density sections of the network. The ministry has prioritised signalling modernisation, train protection technologies and centralised traffic control to improve network management and reduce operational disruptions.

Item Detail
Allocated amount ₹209 crore
Stations covered Seven (Mohol, Mundhewadi, Bale, Solapur, Hotgi Jn – Hotgi A Cabin, Shahabad, Wadi Jn)
Key technologies Electronic interlocking, Kavach, automatic block signalling, centralised traffic control

Local implications and next steps

For Solapur city and surrounding talukas such as Mohol and Hotgi, improved signalling is likely to mean more reliable timings for passenger trains and better handling of freight movements that feed into the Bijapur–Solapur industrial corridor. Upgrades on this stretch can also reduce delays caused by signalling faults and improve the overall punctuality of services that link Solapur with Pune, Hyderabad and other regional centres.

The official release sets out the scope of works; Indian Railways will now move to tendering, awarding of contracts and execution phases. Timelines for completion, station-wise commissioning dates and any temporary arrangements affecting train schedules will be issued by the Central Railway division as work progresses.

Local commuters and businesses will be watching the rollout closely, particularly for announcements on service diversions and phased commissioning that could affect daily travel. The ministry’s statement positions the project as a step towards safer and more efficient railway operations on one of the country’s busy corridors.
