Pune (Maharashtra)

A 46-year-old sepoy posted with the 282 Defence Security Corps (DSC) platoon at the National Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakwasla, died on Thursday after sustaining a gunshot wound to his neck on September 11, police and military officials said.

Uttamnagar police stated that the incident occurred at Post No. 8 inside the NDA campus at about 10.18 am. The injured soldier was immediately taken to the Military Hospital but later died while undergoing treatment, the police said. Southern Command public relations officer Ankush Chavan confirmed Singh’s death and said the academy would issue a formal statement soon.

Senior police inspector Raghvendra Kshirsagar of the Uttamnagar police station said investigators carried out a spot panchanama and recovered a shell from the weapon at the scene. The postmortem was completed and the body was handed over to family members, he added.

“Whether it is an accidental fire or suicide cannot be determined at this stage,” Inspector Raghvendra Kshirsagar said.

Police said the bullet entered from the front of the neck and exited through the back. Medical records obtained by investigators noted that the sepoy had suffered significant blood loss and showed shallow breathing and diminished consciousness following the injury. The weapon involved and surrounding circumstances are being examined to establish how the shot was fired and how the sepoy sustained the wound.

  • Victim: 46-year-old sepoy, 282 DSC platoon, posted at NDA
  • Date and time: September 11, around 10.18 am
  • Location: Post No. 8, National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, Pune
  • Medical response: Rushed to Military Hospital; later died during treatment
  • Investigation status: Police recovered shell; inquiry continuing to determine if shooting was accidental or self-inflicted

The case has drawn attention because the incident took place inside a well-guarded defence establishment in Pune, home to the tri-service training academy that trains cadets for the Army, Navy and Air Force. Any death within such a facility prompts multiple lines of inquiry — from handling and storage of weapons to personnel protocols and medical response timelines.

Time/Date Event
11 September, ~10.18 am Gunshot at Post No. 8 inside NDA; sepoy injured
Same day Injured taken to Military Hospital; condition critical
Thursday Sepoy died while undergoing treatment; postmortem completed

Police sources said forensic steps at the scene included recovery of the cartridge shell and documentation of the post. Investigators are examining the weapon to determine how it discharged, and whether the shot was self-inflicted or accidental. No final conclusion has been reached, the Uttamnagar police inspector said.

Southern Command PRO Ankush Chavan confirmed the death in the evening and said the NDA would release a statement. Military hospitals and defence establishments generally conduct internal inquiries alongside any police process when an incident involves service personnel inside a cantonment or academy precinct.

The incident is likely to prompt renewed scrutiny of security-post procedures at the NDA, which sits on the Khadakwasla hills close to Pune city and serves as a prominent local landmark. Residents and families of service personnel often watch such investigations closely for clarity on cause, accountability and any recommended changes to safety protocols.

Police did not provide the sepoy’s full name in the initial statement beyond the surname cited by military officials. Investigations remain ongoing and officials said they would share further details after forensic analysis and the NDA’s internal review are complete.

Local authorities have asked that the matter be allowed to proceed through formal investigative channels and requested privacy for the family during the postmortem and handover process.
