Rajasthan seeks ownership of 38 acres in Prayagraj; local team ordered to verify records
The Rajasthan government has staked a claim to about 38 acres of land in Prayagraj, prompting the district administration to reopen revenue and ownership files that date back more than seven decades, The Times of India reported on Thursday.
District Magistrate Manish Kumar Verma has deputed a three-member team led by the SDM (Sadar) to verify the properties and conduct physical inspection after receiving a communication from the additional land management commissioner of Rajasthan, the report said. The disputed tract is located in the Katra area and extends from Laxmi Talkies to Manmohan Park, including Shivala Lane.
"The letter mentioned 38 acres of land at Katra, stretching from Laxmi Talkies to Manmohan Park, including Shivala Lane," the DM told The Times of India.
The district team's mandate, according to the administration, is to compile revenue and ownership records, undertake physical verification on the ground, and prepare a consolidated report for submission to the authorities concerned. Officials were asked to complete the exercise at the earliest.
Prayagraj figures prominently in the Rajasthan letter: the district accounted for the largest area referenced compared with Agra, Varanasi and Mathura, the report added. The correspondence from the Rajasthan chief secretary directed that the properties once belonging to the erstwhile Jaipur princely state be recorded in the name of Rajasthan following integration after Independence.
- Action ordered: three-member team under SDM (Sadar) to verify records and physical status.
- Scope of review: revenue and ownership documents stretching back over seven decades.
- Area under claim: 38 acres in Katra, Prayagraj (from Laxmi Talkies to Manmohan Park, including Shivala Lane).
Officials said the team will prepare a compiled report on the current status of the properties including documentary and physical verification. The district administration has not yet indicated a timeline for completion nor commented on any interim administrative measures for the land in question.
Land claims by erstwhile princely states can trigger complex legal and administrative reviews because documentation and record-keeping practices have evolved substantially since Independence. If records show title or covenant obligations that favour the Jaipur royal estate, the matter could progress through routine revenue channels and, as required, to higher legal forums. Conversely, clear contemporaneous records in the name of current occupants or the state would complicate any transfer of title to another jurisdiction.
| City | Reference in Rajasthan letter |
|---|---|
| Prayagraj | 38 acres at Katra (Laxmi Talkies to Manmohan Park; Shivala Lane) |
| Varanasi | Properties of the erstwhile Jaipur princely state mentioned |
| Agra | Properties of the erstwhile Jaipur princely state mentioned |
| Mathura | Properties of the erstwhile Jaipur princely state mentioned |
The development adds a new layer to local land administration in Prayagraj, where land records often determine civic planning, development projects and property rights. District officials will be required to reconcile historical covenants, post-Independence record entries and present-day occupancy status. Any change in recorded title could have implications for residents, markets and municipal planning in the Katra locality.
District and revenue officials are now examining archival entries and contemporary entries in the land revenue department. Once the verification is complete and documents compiled, the report will be forwarded to the departments that made the request, the report said.
The Times of India first reported the letter and the district administration's response.
