Nagpur opens 8.90 km Indora–Dighori flyover; city set for 15 more and wider infrastructure push

An 8.90 km, ₹998 crore flyover linking Indora and Dighori was inaugurated digitally in Nagpur on Saturday. The Dr Keshav Balirampant Hedgewar Flyover adds to the city’s growing elevated network as state leaders outline plans for more ring roads, employment zones and civic works.

Nagpur, Sept 19: Nagpur added a major new arterial link on Saturday with the opening of the 8.90 km Indora–Dighori flyover, a project built at a cost of ₹998 crore and named the Dr Keshav Balirampant Hedgewar Flyover. The inauguration was done digitally by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in the presence of Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, officials said.

Project details and civic context

The flyover, conceived by the Union minister, was completed in record time, the state government said. The structure spans 8.90 km and incorporates 22 murals at Ashok Chowk based on the original text of the Constitution, officials added. The project is expected to ease traffic on key north–south corridors and provide an uninterrupted link across busy junctions.

Fadnavis emphasised that efforts are underway to develop Nagpur in a more organised manner and to plan for future expansion. The inauguration comes at a time when the city is already home to 35 flyovers, and authorities have proposed 15 more to support anticipated growth.

Wider development package and related initiatives

Officials and ministers outlined several linked initiatives aimed at shaping Nagpur’s long-term urban footprint:

  • Completion of the outer ring road and planning for another ring road to cater to future traffic and expansion.
  • A proposed employment-oriented development across about 2,000 acres.
  • Projects to generate energy from waste and the use of cement concrete roads to address pothole problems.

Guardian Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule said two major development projects were planned for each assembly constituency. A provision of ₹1,000 crore has been earmarked for Nagpur’s development, and the Deekshabhoomi development plan has reportedly received approval, officials said.

“The project was conceived by the Union minister and completed in a record time,” an official statement said, describing the flyover as part of a broader drive to organise Nagpur’s infrastructure.

What this means for commuters and the city

For daily commuters, the new elevated link should reduce congestion at several bottlenecks by providing an uninterrupted corridor between Indora and Dighori. The inclusion of constitutional murals at Ashok Chowk adds a cultural and civic element to the roadway, signalling a blend of infrastructure and public art.

Planners will be watching how the flyover integrates with the existing road network and forthcoming ring roads. The employment zone proposal and the allocation of funds indicate a policy push to combine transport improvements with economic development, but implementation timelines for the ring roads and the 2,000-acre project were not specified in the statements released at the inauguration.

Item Detail
Length 8.90 km
Cost ₹998 crore
Murals at Ashok Chowk 22
Existing flyovers in city 35
Flyovers proposed 15

Local residents and motorists in and around areas such as Sitabuldi, Sadar and Kamptee Road will likely feel the immediate effects, while longer-term impacts depend on the timely completion of the ring roads and the planned employment hub. Officials have highlighted that cement concrete roads have improved durability on several stretches, and waste-to-energy plans aim to address both sanitation and power needs.

As Nagpur grows—both as a regional transport node and as the RSS’s historical headquarters—city planners face the twin challenge of expanding capacity while ensuring balanced urban development. The Indora–Dighori flyover is the latest, and among the largest, of recent investments intended to shape that future.
