Madurai, 8 September: The mother of a 16-year-old Scheduled Caste girl who took her life on August 25 has lodged a formal complaint with the Madurai district collector seeking the arrest of the headmistress of a government school in Usilampatti, alleging casteist insults and humiliation during an admission visit on August 24.
Allegation of insult, subsequent death
The petitioner, identified in official records as P. Thavamani (40) of Ambedkar Nagar, Thottapanayakanur in Usilampatti, told mediapersons that she and her daughter, P. Nisanthi (16), had gone to the Government Model Higher Secondary School, Usilampatti, seeking admission.
Thavamani said they were kept waiting for more than half an hour before they could enter the headmistress’s chamber. She alleged that the headmistress, named in the complaint as Vimaladevi, questioned Nisanthi’s credentials despite receiving positive remarks from a teacher at the girl’s previous school.
According to the mother’s account, when Thavamani pleaded with folded hands, the headmistress tapped her hands away and asked them to leave the premises, stating admission would not be granted. Thavamani asserted that casteist slurs were also used.
“The HM’s disparaging comments and conduct killed my daughter. I want justice for her death. The HM should be arrested, the chargesheet in the case must be filed within the stipulated period of two months and appropriate compensation should be issued for the family,” the mother said while crying.

Police records show that a case was first registered on August 25 under the accidental death/Natural Causes section (BNSS 194). Investigators later added Section 108 on abetment of suicide and provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, specifically Section 3(2)(v), according to official sources.
