Thiruvananthapuram: Keralam has initiated efforts to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) and a modern digital ecosystem across the tourism value chain as part of a broader push to position the State as an international experiential destination, Tourism Minister P.C. Vishnunadh said on Saturday.

Policy, industry status and start-up push

The Minister said the forthcoming State tourism policy will place emphasis on tech-driven measures and that the Government has decided to accord industry status to the tourism sector. These steps, he added, are expected to expedite efforts to upscale the sector and attract investment.

Mr Vishnunadh said the Tourism department is working with stakeholders to explore how AI can be used to make tourism in Keralam “smarter, more inclusive and sustainable”, enabling activities at greater speed and scale amid stiff domestic and global competition. The Government also plans programmes to promote tourism start-ups, leveraging Kerala’s existing innovation ecosystem.

“Our aim is to see that tourists coming to the State are treated with a wholesome Keralam experience,” the Minister said, stressing a shift from promoting a few places individually to offering integrated, destination-wide experiences.

What the technology drive aims to change

Officials described the strategy as moving beyond destination-focused packages to a unified approach that curates a complete visitor experience. Digital tools and AI are being considered for functions such as personalised itinerary planning, demand forecasting, resource allocation and destination management.

The Government will encourage the State’s start-up community to develop solutions for efficient delivery of tourism services and to increase youth participation in the sector. Industry leaders are expected to support these efforts through funding and mentorship, the Minister said.

  • Policy anchor: Upcoming tourism policy to prioritise AI and digitalisation.
  • Industry status: Granting industry status to tourism to fast-track reforms and investment.
  • Start-up enablement: Programmes to promote tourism tech start-ups and youth engagement.
  • Standards and access: Focus on best management practices and barrier-free tourism.

Standards, accessibility and management

The Minister emphasised that adoption of technology must go hand-in-hand with higher service standards. “We need to ensure that our travel and hospitality services follow the best management practices and world standards,” he said, adding that barrier-free access will be a priority.

Digital solutions are expected to improve the management of infrastructure and tourist destinations, helping authorities monitor visitor flow, conserve natural assets and co-ordinate services across municipalities, tourism boards and private operators. The Tourism department has reportedly already drawn up a programme to assist in this effort.

Opportunities and practical implications

For travellers, a technology-enabled tourism ecosystem could mean more personalised services, quicker responses from operators, and easier discovery of offbeat or lesser-known experiences. For industry stakeholders, AI-driven analytics can improve yield management, reduce operational waste and sharpen marketing to target segments.

For the State’s start-up and innovation community the focus offers practical avenues for collaboration with hotels, operators, local government bodies and travel platforms. The Minister specifically called on industry leaders to support young innovators with funding and mentorship.

Initiative Expected outcome
AI and digital ecosystem Smarter destination management, personalised traveller services
Industry status for tourism Faster investment, formal incentives and sectoral growth
Start-up promotion programmes Innovation, youth employment, tech-driven service delivery

Challenges to be addressed

Officials and industry stakeholders will need to ensure that technology adoption does not widen inequities between well-resourced destinations and smaller, community-led enterprises. Training, capacity building and access to finance will be essential if smaller operators and local communities are to benefit from digitalisation.

Privacy and data governance are additional considerations as AI and digital platforms gather traveller information. The Minister’s remarks suggest the State will seek a measured approach that couples innovation with standards and accessibility.

The move to blend Kerala’s natural and cultural strengths with AI and digital tools marks an important moment in the State’s tourism strategy. If implemented with attention to inclusivity and sustainability, it could reshape how visitors discover and experience Keralam in the years ahead.
