COIMBATORE, Oct — Central Railway has regularised the Jabalpur–Coimbatore special train into a weekly express service, offering Coimbatore residents a permanent direct rail link to central India and improved connectivity along the Konkan coast, officials said.

Service details and schedule

A senior Bhusawal division official said the special service 02198/02197 will be converted into train number 20160 Jabalpur–Coimbatore Weekly Express, commencing regular operations from October 23. The train will depart Jabalpur every Friday at 11.50 pm, reach Nashik Road at 11.40 am on Saturday and arrive at Coimbatore at 2.30 pm on Sunday via Panvel, Ratnagiri and Madgaon. In the reverse direction, train number 20159 Coimbatore–Jabalpur Weekly Express will start on October 26, leaving Coimbatore every Monday at 5.05 pm, reaching Nashik Road at 8.40 pm on Tuesday and Jabalpur at 8.45 am on Wednesday.

Operational benefits and passenger impact

The Bhusawal division official said regularisation will bring operational priority, punctuality and easier ticket availability compared with the earlier special service, which faced frequent delays and attracted higher fares. The official added that the change will improve reliability for passengers travelling between Maharashtra and southern India.
"Train number 20160 Jabalpur–Coimbatore Weekly Express will begin regular operations from Oct 23. It will depart Jabalpur every Friday... and arrive at Coimbatore at 2.30 pm on Sunday," the official said.
Local travellers in Nashik and passengers who travel via Nashik Road welcomed the decision. Regularisation is expected to ease pressure on existing long-distance services that connect Coimbatore and the Konkan belt. Observers noted that the Mangaldweep Express has been heavily crowded for long stretches, and a permanent weekly service should distribute passenger load more evenly.

Connectivity along the Konkan corridor

The regular train will halt at several important stations on the Konkan route, including Panvel, Roha, Khed, Chiplun, Ratnagiri, Kankavli, Kudal, Thivim, Madgaon, Karwar and Mangaluru, besides Kozhikode and Palakkad before reaching Coimbatore. Railway officials said this will provide a direct link from Nashik Road and other Konkan stations to Coimbatore without passengers needing to change trains in Goa or Karnataka. Key advantages highlighted by officials and passengers include:
  • Predictable weekly timetable and better on-time performance due to regularisation.
  • Operational priority over special trains, reducing the risk of long delays.
  • Standard fare structure and easier reservation availability through the regular service scheduling.

Local significance and expected usage

For Coimbatore, a major industrial and educational hub in Tamil Nadu, improved rail links to Maharashtra and central India are likely to support business travel, student movement and tourism. The service’s timing — arrival in Coimbatore on Sunday afternoon and departure on Monday evening — targets both return weekend travellers and longer-stay passengers. Railway officials said the move responds to persistent demand for through services on the Konkan route beyond Goa. Currently, apart from the Mangaldweep Express, the Jabalpur–Coimbatore service was one of the few trains providing onward connectivity from Nashik Road via the Konkan corridor. Regularisation is expected to relieve congestion on the heavily utilised Mangaldweep Express and provide Coimbatore commuters an alternative travel option. The Bhusawal division official said ticketing for the regular service will be available through standard reservation systems from the date of introduction, and passengers can check timings and halt details on official railway portals. Local stakeholders said they will monitor punctuality and occupancy once the service begins regular operations later this month.
