Guntur resident held after Saligramam woman’s death; probe continues
CHENNAI: The city police arrested Mohammed Hussain (32), a resident of Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, on charges of abetment to suicide after a woman in Saligramam was found dead at her home, officials reported on Wednesday.
Virugambakkam police said Hussain was traced to Guntur following an investigation that began when neighbours discovered the woman unconscious in her locked flat and took her to hospital, where she was declared brought dead. A search is under way for another suspect who is alleged to have been involved in threatening the woman.
"Police said that the victim, who lived with her husband and a three-year-old son, had been distressed after she received messages on her phone from different numbers, in which the person threatened to share her obscene pictures to her husband."
According to the police account, the woman had been receiving threatening messages and calls from various numbers in which the sender warned of sharing explicit images with her husband. She informed her husband about the calls and blocked the numbers, the police said.
The sequence of events, as described by investigators, was:
- The woman, who lived with her husband and a three-year-old child, received threatening messages and calls purportedly aimed at circulating intimate material.
- She cut off contact with one of the men she had been communicating with.
- After contact was severed, the man allegedly sent audio recordings of their conversations and issued further threats.
- On the day of the incident the husband left for work; when he was unable to reach his wife by phone he alerted neighbours, who found the flat locked from inside and broke open the door.
- Police were informed and the woman was taken to hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
Police said a review of the woman’s phone showed communications and financial transactions with Hussain, who runs a travel business, and that he had recently been sent an audio clip and then allegedly issued threats after contact was cut off. Chennai police later traced Hussain to Guntur and arrested him.
Investigators have registered an offence for abetment to suicide and are pursuing lines of inquiry to locate the other person named in the probe. No further details about the other suspect were disclosed by authorities.
