Heavy rains inundate city; four die after trees fall on shelters
Heavy monsoon downpours associated with an active depression over the region inundated large parts of Gorakhpur on Sunday, causing widespread urban flooding and claiming four lives in separate tree-collapse incidents, officials said.
District Magistrate and Collector Deepak Meena told news agencies that three people died in Campierganj when a tree fell on the hut where they were taking shelter. Another person was killed in Bansgaon after a tree fell on them, bringing the district toll to four.
"Given the nature of the depression that formed, warnings had been issued for heavy torrential rain and lightning strikes across East Uttar Pradesh, West Uttar Pradesh, and almost all other areas...Three people lost their lives in Campierganj," Meena said.
Meena said administration teams have been mobilised across all tehsils and blocks to respond to the situation and provide assistance to affected residents. He added that ambulances have been deployed at all blocks and tehsils to prevent delays in medical response. The District Magistrate also said procedures including post-mortems and the provision of financial assistance under natural calamity and other government schemes are underway for the victims.
Local inspections and criticism of drainage
BJP Member of Parliament Ravi Kishan inspected waterlogged streets in the city and assessed the ground situation, according to media reports. Residents and shopkeepers criticised the municipal drainage system, saying accumulated water did not clear even after several hours of rain.
- Large parts of Gorakhpur experienced severe waterlogging during continuous downpours.

Residents described disruption to normal life as streets and low-lying areas filled with rainwater. Local traders reported business interruption due to persistent waterlogging. The criticism of the drainage system highlights recurring urban flood concerns during intense rainfall in the city.
Official response and next steps
The District Magistrate said the Chief Minister had issued directives to ensure immediate action and provide all possible support to affected families without delay. The administration's priorities, as outlined by the DM, include search-and-rescue where required, medical assistance through stationed ambulances, coordination of relief measures and initiation of statutory processes such as post-mortems and disbursement of assistance under relevant government schemes.

Urban flooding during brief but intense spells of rain is a recurring concern for Gorakhpur, where inadequate drainage in some localities has previously led to prolonged waterlogging. The current episode is linked by officials to the active depression, for which warnings had been issued across East and West Uttar Pradesh.
As the administration continues relief and investigation procedures, the immediate focus remains on assisting affected families and clearing waterlogged areas to restore normal life. Further details on relief amounts and specific rehabilitation measures will be released by the district authorities as processes such as post-mortems and beneficiary identification progress.
Local residents are being urged to follow official advisories until weather conditions stabilise and to report fallen trees or blocked drains to municipal and district control rooms for prompt action.
