Outages reported across city after rain-related faults
Ghaziabad residents in several neighbourhoods experienced intermittent power interruptions from Sunday midnight into Monday afternoon, local residents and the power utility said, with the disconnections largely blamed on faults caused by recent rain. Affected localities included Indirapuram pockets such as Gyan Khand and Abhay Khand, and Ghaziabad wards including Loni, Govindpuram and Shahtri Nagar. Noida sectors 11, 12, 44 and 55 also reported similar problems.
Residents said the outages were sporadic and accompanied by voltage fluctuations, leaving some households dependent on inverters. Ashish Tyagi, a resident of Gyan Khand, said that despite lodging multiple complaints since morning, action was slow and supply remained inconsistent.
Discom inspects new substations; Diwali deadline set
Raveesh Gupta, Managing Director of Prayagraj Vidyut Vitaran Nigam Limited (PVVNL), inspected two under-construction substations of 33/11 kV capacity located in Noida Sectors 94 and 132 over the weekend. During the visit he reviewed ongoing construction and the electrical infrastructure at the sites and directed officials to accelerate work while maintaining technical and quality standards.
Gupta urged that both substations be completed and energised before Diwali, saying the extra capacity and modernisation would benefit consumers by strengthening the distribution network and helping meet rising electricity demand.
“Significant work is underway to strengthen and modernise the power distribution network under the RDSS modernisation scheme,” the MD said, according to the utility.
RDSS scheme: aims and local impact
The two substations are being built under the central Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS). The scheme includes construction of new substations, augmentation of existing ones with higher-capacity transformers, and the extensive laying of high- and low-tension underground cables to reduce technical losses and protect lines from weather-related damage.
PVVNL officials said undergrounding conductors and adding capacity are expected to reduce outages caused by rain and storms — a key objective given the recent sequences of faults that affected both Ghaziabad and adjacent Noida sectors.
- Immediate cause: rain-related faults and resulting line problems.
- Short-term action: field inspections and speeded-up construction of 33/11 kV substations.
- Long-term aim: capacity enhancement and underground cabling under RDSS to lower technical losses and weather vulnerability.
What residents can expect
Officials directed regular monitoring of work at the new substation sites and adherence to prescribed technical standards. The expectation set by the utility is that once the substations are commissioned, the region’s distribution network will be better equipped to supply stable power and meet growing demand.
Until the new infrastructure is energised, however, households in several Ghaziabad neighbourhoods should anticipate occasional fluctuations during heavy rains or until field repairs and upgrades are completed.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Inspected substations | 33/11 kV, Sectors 94 and 132 (Noida) |
| Scheme | Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) |
| Primary aim | Capacity enhancement, underground cabling, reduce technical losses |
The MD’s inspection and the firm deadline for energisation before Diwali underscore the utility’s push to deliver more reliable power ahead of the festival season, when household consumption typically rises. Officials said they will continue to monitor the substations’ construction and the broader distribution works to try to limit disruptions in the coming weeks.
