NAGERCOIL, Kanyakumari district — Burglars broke into a house near Nagercoil and stole a substantial quantity of gold jewellery from a family whose woman member is an active social media content creator, Kanyakumari district police said on Saturday.
How the theft was discovered
Police said the incident was reported after the householder, identified as Vinothkumar, returned late on Friday night from Tirunelveli, where he had gone with family to buy clothes for his two-year-old child’s birthday. On entering the house at VIP Garden near Anthana Nadar Kudiyiruppu, he noticed the rear door had been forced open.
On checking the first-floor bedroom, the complainant found a bureau had been damaged and that 220 sovereigns of gold jewellery were missing. The loss was registered as a case and investigators immediately visited the scene, police said.
Method of entry and initial leads
According to the police, the intruders had cut through the rear door frame using a gas cutter to effect entry. Investigating officers said CCTV footage from the vicinity is being scanned to track the movements of the suspects and identify any vehicles used to ferry the stolen items.
Police have formed a special team to apprehend those involved and to recover the jewellery, the statement added.
Possible motive under investigation
Investigators said they were probing whether public display of wealth on social media platforms may have prompted the burglary. The householder’s wife, Madhumitha, 29, is described in the police report as a YouTuber who often shared reels and posts featuring her jewellery collection and who had spoken publicly about buying gold on a monthly basis.
Police sources indicated this pattern of publicising valuables is one of several lines of inquiry, along with forensic examination of the scene, scrutiny of CCTV, and examination of local pawn and gold-buying outlets.
Local concern and police advice
The size of the haul — 220 sovereigns — has alarmed residents in the area and renewed calls for better home security awareness, particularly among people who display valuables online. Police advised citizens to refrain from publicly broadcasting details of valuable possessions, to install robust locks and surveillance, and to immediately report suspicious activity.
- Immediate actions by police: Crime scene examination, CCTV review, formation of a special team.
- Suspected method: Forced entry by cutting the rear door frame with a gas cutter.
- Investigative leads: Social media activity, local markets for gold, CCTV and neighbourhood enquiries.

Wider implications for homeowners and content creators
Police said the case underlines the need for caution among homeowners who use social media to publicise personal possessions. Law-enforcement officials commonly warn that regular posts displaying valuables can attract criminal attention and advised content creators to exercise discretion or to use private settings for posts that reveal assets or daily routines.
The special team will also liaise with jewellers’ associations and scrap-gold dealers to flag the stolen items. Officers plan to circulate descriptions of the jewellery and seek help from the public to identify any attempt to sell such a large quantity in the region.
Investigations are ongoing, and further updates are expected once forensic analysis of the scene and CCTV footage yield leads, police said.
