TAMENGLONG, Manipur: A 17-year-old boy from the Naga community was killed in an alleged ambush by suspected Kuki militants on Monday morning in Tamenglong district, police said, in an incident that has further strained relations between the two communities in the state.
What police say
The victim has been identified as NK Wiphenbou, a resident of Upper Takou village under the Tamei subdivision. According to a senior police officer, Wiphenbou was travelling alone from Upper Takou to Tamei town to purchase essential commodities when he was attacked at about 10.30 am.
Police said Naga village volunteers discovered the boy's body on a narrow pathway. Based on the spot examination and public enquiries, investigators suspect the killing was an ambush carried out by Kuki militants. The officer indicated there was no exchange of fire at the scene, and at this stage said they had ruled out the possibility that the youth had been caught in crossfire.
Reactions from local leaders
Awangbow Newmai, MLA from the Tamei Assembly constituency, condemned the killing and asserted the attack occurred between Upper Takou and Tamah (Malek) while the boy was en route to buy essentials for his family.
“I unequivocally condemn the cowardly and heinous acts of terrorism that target innocent civilians and threaten peace and security,” Newmai wrote in a social media post, according to police reports.
Former Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh also urged authorities to take decisive action and ensure accountability. In a social media message cited by police sources, he said the killing of the student was “deeply painful” and warned of the danger of further loss of innocent lives.
“Today, it is 17-year-old NK Wiphenbou. Who will be next?” Biren wrote, calling for those responsible to be brought to justice without delay.
Local context and communal tensions
The incident comes amid ongoing friction between Naga and Kuki communities in parts of Manipur. Police have characterised the Tamenglong killing as widening of the conflict, though details about motive and responsibility remain under investigation. Different versions of the events leading to the boy's death have circulated locally, the senior officer noted, and inquiries are continuing.
At present, authorities are conducting forensic examinations and collecting witness statements at the scene. The police have not released details about any arrests or identified suspects formally charged in connection with the killing.
