Knoxville Raceway officials postponed Friday night’s FVP Hard Knox preliminary program at the 65th annual NOS Energy Drink Knoxville Nationals because of heavy rain and ongoing showers, moving the session to 11 a.m. Central on Saturday and creating a Championship Saturday doubleheader.

Weather forces schedule change

Thunderstorms and steady rainfall Friday morning left the track and infield too wet to prepare for competition, and additional showers in the afternoon hindered drying efforts. Track officials announced the decision to postpone the program shortly before 6:45 p.m. local time.

According to Interstate Batteries High Limit Racing publicist Brian Walker, the postponement marks the first rainout during Knoxville Nationals week since Aug. 6, 2014 — ending a 45-race streak of uninterrupted Nationals events during the week.

"It's the first rain out at Knoxville Nationals week since Aug. 6, 2014, ending a 45-race streak," said Brian Walker, publicist for Interstate Batteries High Limit Racing.

What’s changing for Saturday

The rescheduled Hard Knox program is expected to begin with pit gates opening early and an adjusted timetable to accommodate both the morning qualifying and the regular Championship Saturday lineup later that evening.

  • Pit gates will open at 8 a.m. on Saturday.
  • Grandstands will open at 9:30 a.m.
  • Hot laps for the Hard Knox program are scheduled for 11 a.m. Central.
  • A break will follow the morning program so track staff can prepare for the scheduled Championship Saturday events.
  • Saturday night hot laps remain scheduled for 6:45 p.m.

Competition and fan impacts

The Hard Knox format provides drivers who did not secure favorable starting positions during Wednesday and Thursday qualifying another opportunity to race into the Saturday night 50-lap A‑main. Under the format, the top four finishers in the Hard Knox feature advance directly to the Knoxville Nationals A‑main.

Because of the morning rescheduling, several ancillary events and services were affected. Knoxville Raceway officials canceled Saturday morning’s worship service and the public drivers meeting. Promoters said the Iowa Lottery Stage prerace shows are expected to proceed on schedule if conditions allow. Tickets purchased for Friday’s Hard Knox program will be honored for the rescheduled Saturday morning session.

The compressed schedule creates potential operational challenges for race officials and fans alike. Track crews will have to turnaround the facility after the morning program to prepare for the Championship Saturday program later in the evening, and spectators who planned on attending Friday night sessions will need to alter travel and lodging plans accordingly.

Local context

The Knoxville Nationals are held at Knoxville Raceway, often referred to as the Sprint Car Capital of the World, and draw thousands of spectators and teams to the county each August. A postponement during Nationals week affects not only fans and competitors but also local businesses that benefit from the influx of visitors — restaurants, hotels and retailers that rely on Nationals-week traffic.

Officials advised ticketholders and attendees to check Knoxville Raceway and event social channels for any further updates, particularly if weather forecasts change. With additional storms possible, organizers will continue to monitor conditions and announce any further schedule modifications as needed.

The Hard Knox postponement is a notable interruption to a long run of weather-free Nationals weeks. For now, officials and fans are pivoting to a busy Saturday that will feature both a morning qualifying doubleheader and the traditional Championship Saturday evening program.
