The University of Florida women’s soccer team leaned on its veterans Thursday night, turning a senior-day celebration into an on-field victory as the Gators beat Youngstown State 2-0 at Donald R. Dizney Stadium.
Early pressure sets tone
Florida imposed itself immediately, taking three shots inside the opening five minutes and using a high press that kept Youngstown State pinned in its defensive half. Florida pressed after the break and continued to search for a second goal. The Gators struck woodwork more than once — Lael Hill hit the post in the 50th minute and Hess rattled the bar from long range — and goalkeeper Kendall Sears kept Youngstown State in the game with several saves.
The cushion finally arrived in the 61st minute when senior defender Hannah Jibril took advantage of space in the Penguins’ defense. After receiving a pass from Main near the top of the box, Jibril used her first touch to set up a left-footed shot that sailed into the top of the net for her second goal of the season.
The insurance goal allowed Florida to manage the closing stages and preserve a clean sheet while the program honored its senior class.
