Local sentencing follows frightening Valley Walk Green incident
A Kettering man has been jailed for 27 months after confronting a woman and her child in a town green while carrying what turned out to be a knife, and for repeatedly breaching a court-imposed Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO).
Jamie Morgan, aged 49 and of Athelstan Road, pleaded guilty to two offences at Northampton Crown Court and was sentenced on 30 June. The offences arose from an incident in November last year when a mother and her son were walking through Valley Walk Green in Kettering.
According to prosecuting material, Morgan approached the pair from his mobility scooter and began shouting at the woman. When she declined to engage, the defendant reportedly left his scooter and moved towards her holding an object the woman initially thought was a mobile phone. She soon realised the object was a Stanley knife, whereupon she began recording and warned she would contact police. Morgan then left the scene.

Police investigators discovered that Morgan had also repeatedly approached and spoken to the victim’s son over a period of about two years, conduct that put him in breach of the SHPO. That order prohibited contact with children under the age of 16 except in specific circumstances laid out by the court.
"No-one should have to fear for their safety while walking through their community, particularly when simply going about their daily life," said Constable James Bowes of Northamptonshire Police. "This was a frightening incident that left the victim and her family feeling distressed and intimidated. Morgan’s decision to confront her while carrying a blade was completely unacceptable. He also breached a Sexual Harm Prevention Order that was in place to protect children. We welcome the court’s sentence and hope it provides reassurance to the victim. I’d like to thank everyone who helped with the investigation."
