Flexible youngster ready for senior roles as Rovers prepare for League One opener
Doncaster Rovers will look to harness the versatility of Bayley McCann as they begin the 2026-27 League One season, manager Grant McCann has said. The manager, who is also the player’s father, described the 20-year-old as a player who can be relied upon across several positions after a productive pre-season.
McCann joined the Rovers in January from Barnsley and, while he made only brief appearances towards the end of last season, he has been given more prominent roles during summer friendlies. The youngster featured down the right in a number of games and struck goals in warm-up victories over Linfield and Harrogate, signalling an upward trajectory as Rovers head to Mansfield for the weekend opener.
Grant McCann highlighted the benefits of having a player who can fill multiple roles in a squad. He stressed that adaptability keeps a player “around a squad” and pointed to other recent signings as examples of the club’s interest in multi-positional options.
"I think he's flexible, but he can play off the right of a front three or the left of a front three... He's played left centre-half for Barnsley in a back three. And he's played left-back and left wing-back."
The manager outlined the pathways McCann has travelled in his youth career: from being a number nine at Peterborough's academy in the under-8s to under-16s age groups, to being moved to left-back when he progressed into the under-16 to under-18 bracket, and later playing as a left wing-back at Barnsley. Those transitions, Grant McCann said, have equipped the player to perform in different systems and positions.
- Arrival at Doncaster: January 2026 from Barnsley.
- Age: 20-year-old forward/multi-role player.
- Pre-season form: Goals in friendlies against Linfield and Harrogate.
- Season opener: Away at Mansfield this weekend.
The manager also made a point of acknowledging perceptions that can arise when speaking publicly about a relative, noting the difficulty but arguing that Bayley’s performances speak for themselves: "I know it's not easy, me speaking about my son because people think a lot of things about it. But I think that he's shown everyone that he's capable of performing at this level."
| Role/Position | Context |
|---|---|
| Number nine | Peterborough academy (under-8s to under-16s) |
| Left-back | Moved to this position in under-16 to under-18 age groups |
| Left wing-back | Played this role at Barnsley |
| Left centre-half (in a back three) | Also deployed in this defensive role at Barnsley |
| Right of a front three / Left of a front three | Positions used in recent pre-season matches for Doncaster |
Grant McCann compared Bayley’s flexibility to that of another player recently re-signed to a long-term deal, saying the club values adaptability. He described the re-signed player – who has signed a three-year contract – as "very, very similar" in terms of versatility, underlining a recruitment approach that favours multi-purpose squad members.
As the Rovers prepare for the first competitive fixture of the campaign, the manager’s remarks suggest Bayley McCann will be considered for selection not just as an option on the left, where he has most often played for the club, but also on the right wing and centrally if required. That tactical flexibility may prove useful during the long League One season, where squad depth and the ability to switch formations are regularly tested.
Supporters will be watching closely at Mansfield this weekend to see whether McCann’s pre-season promise translates into regular first-team minutes once the competitive fixtures begin in earnest.
