Varanasi municipal and district administrations have moved into a heightened response mode after intermittent heavy rainfall affected several parts of the city, officials said on Sunday. Municipal Commissioner Himanshu Nagpal personally inspected major junctions and ordered teams to remain on duty round the clock to prevent and quickly clear waterlogging.

Inspections and immediate action

The Municipal Commissioner carried out a detailed survey of multiple low-lying and traffic-critical points across the city to assess drainage needs and to supervise relief measures. Locations inspected included Kachari Square, Police Line Square, Pandeypur Square, Hukulganj Road, Tari Khana Tiraha, Chowkaghat, Teliyabag, Mari Mata, Maldahiya Square, Sajan Tiraha, Sigra Square, Rathyatra Square, Mahmoorganj, Andharapul and Maqbool Alam Road.

Teams equipped with pumps and sanitation crew were mobilised and, according to municipal officials, water was drained from affected pockets within a few hours. The Commissioner is reported to have issued clear instructions to municipal officers and employees to maintain a 24-hour duty roster to ensure uninterrupted drainage and prompt relief to citizens.

  • Rapid drainage: Pumps and sanitation workers deployed to clear waterlogged spots.
  • Round-the-clock duty: Municipal staff placed on continuous duty to manage drainage operations.
  • Public response: Residents praised the swift arrival of Corporation teams at inundated sites.
Residents said the immediate arrival and action of corporation teams to drain waterlogged areas was highly commendable.

District flood preparedness

In parallel, the district administration has been preparing for a possible rise in the water levels of the Ganga and Varuna rivers and the attendant risk of flooding in the Varanasi district. Authorities have identified 61 flood relief camps across the district to shelter families in case evacuation becomes necessary.

These camps, the administration said, are being readied to provide essential services including accommodation, food, drinking water, lighting and sanitation. Officials emphasised that the multi-layered preparedness aims to enable swift relief and rescue operations if riverine flooding intensifies.

Preparedness Item Details
Flood relief camps 61 identified across the district
Critical inspections Multiple low-lying intersections and roads in Varanasi city
Operational posture Municipal staff on 24-hour duty; pumps and sanitation crews deployed

Meteorological warning

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported isolated occurrences of extremely heavy rainfall — exceeding 20 centimetres — in parts of East Uttar Pradesh and forecasted widespread rain through 5 September. The IMD advised caution for standing crops, recommending that irrigation, intercultural activities, fertiliser application and plant protection measures be postponed during wet conditions to avoid damage.

Local authorities said they were monitoring IMD advisories closely and coordinating between municipal, district and emergency services to respond to new developments promptly.

For residents, the immediate impact has been limited to transient waterlogging at junctions and some disruption to traffic and pedestrian movement. Municipal teams' swift clearance of standing water at the inspected sites drew public appreciation, officials noted. The district's activation of relief centres aims to provide a contingency for larger-scale displacement should river levels rise further.

Officials urged citizens to avoid flooded stretches, follow directions from local authorities and stay updated through official channels as the situation evolves.
