Sagar (Madhya Pradesh): At least eight people have died and several others fell ill after allegedly consuming illicit liquor in villages of Banda tehsil, about 30 km from Sagar district headquarters, officials said on Sunday.
Deaths, hospitalisations and differing counts
District authorities confirmed multiple deaths and mass hospitalisation after residents of two villages complained of nausea, vomiting and other symptoms following the consumption of hooch late on Saturday. Sagar Collector Pratibha Pal, who visited the affected areas, told PTI that "ten persons have died after consuming illegal spurious liquor in two villages of Banda tehsil" and that screening was underway.

Local BJP MLA Virendra Lodhi provided a slightly different toll, saying, "As per my knowledge, 11 people have died after consuming spurious liquor. Around 25 have been rushed from Banda Civil Hospital to other hospitals for advanced healthcare."
The Chief Medical and Health Officer, Dr Devesh Pateria, said medical teams were deployed across three villages identified as hotspots and that patients were being stabilised locally before referral to higher centres. He indicated the possibility of methyl alcohol (methanol) poisoning based on observed symptoms but said that could not be confirmed yet.
Medical response and investigations
Health teams are conducting door-to-door screening and have stationed doctors and nurses in affected villages. Several patients with fever, headache, vomiting and respiratory distress were moved to the government-run Bundelkhand Medical College and Hospital (BMCH) and other higher medical facilities for advanced care. Authorities said three patients had already been transferred to BMCH.
A magisterial inquiry has been ordered by the district administration to ascertain circumstances of the incident, including procurement and production of the liquor. Preliminary autopsy reports were pending at the time of reporting.
