Railway Board orders administrative shift; effective October 1
The Railway Board has directed that the Mangaluru railway area up to Ullal, including Ullal station, be transferred from the Palakkad division of Southern Railway (SR) to the Mysuru division of South Western Railway (SWR) with effect from October 1, according to the jurisdictional reorganisation order issued on Friday. The decision ends Mangaluru’s long-standing association with the Palakkad division and will reconfigure interchange points and divisional boundaries in the region.
Operational boundaries and interchange points
Under the order, the SWR–SR interchange point will shift from Padil to Ullal. However, Thokur station will remain with Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd (KRCL) and continue as the interchange between KRCL and SWR. The Railway Board said the existing boundaries between KRCL and Southern Railway will become the boundaries between KRCL and South Western Railway, and final divisional and zonal boundaries will be notified through the Railway Gazette.

- Gazetted employees will move with their sanctioned posts to the Mysuru division.
- Group-B officers will be transferred in accordance with existing rules governing such postings.
- Non-gazetted staff have been offered an "as is where is" arrangement: they may either remain with Southern Railway or opt to move to South Western Railway. Those choosing SWR will be transferred on administrative grounds, with seniority determined by service in the present grade.
"The Mangaluru area up to Ullal, including Ullal railway station, will be transferred from Southern Railway to the Mysuru division of SWR," the Railway Board order said.

Locally, the change will alter which divisional headquarters handles day-to-day operational matters, maintenance and passenger grievance redressal for stations falling within the transferred area. - Requests for new long-distance trains or rerouting of existing services under SWR planning.
- Realignment of maintenance schedules and station development projects consistent with Mysuru division policies.
- Changes in ticketing, timetabling and operational coordination where inter-divisional handovers previously involved Palakkad-based control.
