Young woman falls from 10th floor; police probe under way
Jalandhar: A BA final-year student, identified as Mehakpreet Kaur, died after falling from the 10th floor of the Jalandhar Heights apartments, police said. The fall occurred as the woman had reportedly gone to the balcony and sustained injuries that proved fatal.
On receiving information about the incident, Sadar police reached the spot and carried out a preliminary investigation. SHO Sanjeev Suri of the Sadar police station took custody of the body and had it sent for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death, the police said.

- Action taken: Body taken into custody by Sadar police and sent for post-mortem; preliminary spot probe carried out.
Police reported that no suicide note was recovered from the scene. Authorities also noted that the deceased was reportedly suffering from depression. The SHO said the final cause of death would be established only after the post-mortem report is received.
“The body was taken into custody and sent for a post-mortem examination,” police said.
Immediate local response and community impact
The incident occurred in a residential high-rise in the city, raising concerns among neighbours about safety and emergency response in such buildings. High-rise balconies can present serious risks, particularly for residents with mental-health challenges; local welfare groups in Jalandhar often stress the importance of timely counselling and family support for young adults under stress.
The deceased’s funeral was held at the Model Town crematorium, the police said. At this stage, investigators have limited their public comments to procedural points while awaiting the post-mortem results.
Broader policing and procedural notes
The Sadar police’s response followed routine procedures for an unexplained death: on-scene examination, securing of the body, collection of initial evidence, and referral for forensic post-mortem. The absence of a note and the report of prior depression mean investigators will pursue both medical and circumstantial lines of inquiry, the police indicated.

In the same police report, authorities referred to a separate, alleged poisoning case. A 36-year-old lecturer, named Neha and a resident of Kartarpur, died after allegedly being forced to consume toilet cleaner. Her parents, who live in Sangrur, have accused her husband, Umang Bassi, and a woman friend of responsibility for her death.
According to the family, Neha had recorded a written dying declaration before a Judicial Magistrate in which she allegedly held her husband responsible. The family further alleged that while she was undergoing treatment, her husband left with his mother and their six-year-old daughter. Police have registered the matter and it forms part of the wider set of investigations into unexplained deaths reported to local authorities.
Both incidents underline the challenges faced by the city’s police and healthcare systems: timely medical attention, robust investigative procedure and community awareness about mental-health risks. The Sadar police have asked residents with any information related to the Jalandhar Heights incident to come forward so investigators can complete their enquiries once the post-mortem report is available.
