Insider plotted daylight snatch; police recover entire cash haul
Jalandhar police have arrested seven people, including an employee of a local industrialist, in connection with a brazen daylight robbery on August 17 in which around ₹72 lakh was snatched from the businessman’s car, officials said on Sunday.
Commissioner of Police Satinder Singh handed over the recovered money to the complainant, identified in police statements as a 58-year-old proprietor who runs a foundry mill in the city. Police said preliminary investigation showed the robbery was executed after a staff member provided information about the employer’s movements and cash handling.
- Accused alleged to have intercepted the victim’s vehicle with a white car and smashed the windshield before snatching a bag containing the cash.
- Police arrested the suspected insider, named Sunny Khosla (alias Mona), along with six others and recovered the entire amount.
- Two vehicles without number plates, two mobile phones and some blunt weapons were also seized.
Sequence of events and investigation
The industrialist reported the incident after he was attacked while driving home from his factory. According to police, occupants of a white car intercepted his vehicle, broke the front windshield with a rod and snatched a bag containing the cash before fleeing.
Acting swiftly, senior officers reached the spot and collected key evidence. A preliminary probe suggested an inside job, which led investigators to the employee, Sunny Khosla. Police said Khosla conspired with relatives and friends to carry out the robbery.
Arrests, recoveries and remand
Along with Sunny, the commissionerate police arrested six others. The accused named in police statements are:
| Accused | Residence / Note |
|---|---|
| Sunny Khosla (aka Mona) | Employee of the complainant |
| Vikas | Resident of Pada village, Gurdaspur district |
| Sunny (brother of Vikas) | Resident of Pada village, Gurdaspur district |
| Hardeep Singh | Relative of Sunny Khosla |
| Rajvir Gill | Resident of Jalandhar |
| Ranjit Singh | Resident of Batala |
Police said they recovered ₹72 lakh in cash, two cars without number plates, two mobile phones and some blunt weapons from the arrested persons. The accused were produced before a court, which granted police a five-day remand to continue questioning and further probe, the commissioner added.
“Preliminary probe pointed to an insider job. Based on leads, police zeroed in on Mohan’s employee Sunny Khosla, who roped in five accomplices to execute the robbery,”
Commissioner Singh’s comments, as recorded in the police release, underlined the importance of rapid evidence collection at the scene and swift investigative work in recovering the entire consignment of cash.
Local impact and law-and-order concerns
Daylight snatch-and-run robberies involving large amounts of cash have heightened public anxiety, particularly among small industrialists and traders who occasionally carry significant cash receipts. In an economy where some commercial transactions still take place in cash, such incidents underline the need for tighter security measures for businesses transporting large sums.
Police recovery of the full amount and quick arrests will be watched closely by residents and business owners in Jalandhar, who expect both deterrent action and preventive measures. The case also highlights vulnerabilities when staff members have detailed knowledge of employers’ cash movements.
Further investigation will determine the precise sequence of planning and logistics used by the accused and whether any additional accomplices or facilitators were involved, police said. The commissionerate has not announced any charges yet beyond the arrests and remand proceedings.
