Event deferred after Nehru Stadium permission refused

Indore, Sep 2 (PTI) — The Congress on Wednesday announced that party leader Rahul Gandhi will now address the city under the ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ student‑dialogue campaign on September 19 instead of the original date of September 12, after permission to use the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here was denied by the state government, party leaders said.

State Congress president Jitu Patwari made the announcement during a meeting convened to review arrangements for the Indore programme. The party said the change was necessitated by the refusal to allow use of the stadium — which falls under the jurisdiction of the Indore Municipal Corporation — and that it will now identify an alternate venue and rework logistics for the event.

Municipal and legal constraints cited

Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava pointed to a judicial constraint in explaining why the stadium could not be made available. He said the Madhya Pradesh High Court has placed limitations on the use of Nehru Stadium, permitting it only for sports activities or for state‑level government programmes.

"The Madhya Pradesh High Court has clearly stated that only sports activities or state‑level government programmes can be permitted at the stadium," Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava said.

City Congress president Chintu Choukse warned of possible protests if permission for Gandhi’s programme at the Nehru Stadium was not granted, according to the party. The Congress is planning to mobilise around 50,000 students from Indore and surrounding districts for the event, the party said.

About the campaign and issues highlighted

Launched as a student‑dialogue drive, ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ is being organised in multiple cities across India. The Congress has framed the programme as a public conversation on issues such as the country’s future, aspirations of youth, the right to education and the security of the education system.

According to the party, the campaign aims to put pressure on the ruling party over topics including alleged examination question paper leaks, the rising cost of education, irregularities in government recruitment and unemployment. In recent months, the Congress has staged editions of the drive in Kota (Rajasthan), Dehradun (Uttarakhand), Prayagraj (Uttar Pradesh) and Pune (Maharashtra).

Logistics and next steps

Patwari had earlier written to Chief Minister Mohan Yadav requesting that the stadium be made available for the September 12 programme, stating that the event was not a conventional political rally but a public dialogue focused on education and youth concerns. With the stadium unavailable, the party said it would now identify a new venue and make preparations accordingly.

  • Original date: September 12
  • Rescheduled date: September 19
  • Proposed venue: Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium (permission denied)
  • Expected attendees: Around 50,000 students (as claimed by Congress)

The denial of the stadium raises practical questions for organisers about crowd management, transport and coordination with civic authorities — matters of immediate concern in Indore, a city used to large public gatherings and with limited large‑capacity venues under municipal control.

While the Congress has framed the Indore edition as non‑political and focused on student issues, the switch of dates and venue means the party will have to reconfirm permissions, security arrangements and logistics with the administration and law‑and‑order agencies for the new date. The municipal corporation’s role in permitting public events — and the legal boundaries set by the High Court — will be central to where and how the programme proceeds.
