State moves to professionalise KSRTC operations with IIM‑Kozhikode collaboration
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM — The state government has initiated a collaboration between the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) and IIM‑Kozhikode to strengthen operational efficiency and enhance passenger services, Transport Minister C P John said on Sunday. A draft memorandum of understanding (MoU) prepared by KSRTC has already been handed over to the IIM director, with formalisation steps under way.
The proposed engagement will provide management leadership training and skill development for employees across KSRTC departments, the minister said. The programme, as outlined in the institute’s detailed proposal, covers classroom instruction, study materials and accommodation facilities to be provided by IIM‑Kozhikode.
"Steps have been initiated to formalise a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to provide training to officials and leverage management expertise," the Transport Minister said.
The training is aimed at both back‑office and frontline cadres. Apart from IT, technical services and accounts staff, specialised modules will be provided for personnel who interact directly with passengers — including drivers, conductors and station masters. Courses will include communication, etiquette and safety awareness, alongside targeted modules to improve service delivery for women, children, persons with disabilities and senior citizens.

According to the minister’s statement, IIM‑Kozhikode’s proposal includes development of a system for passenger opinion surveys and an expansion of online services. The plan also envisages the introduction of artificial intelligence and data analytics to help KSRTC improve route planning, ticketing and customer feedback mechanisms.
In addition to service and technology upgrades, the collaboration will commission studies to identify new logistics and business opportunities for KSRTC arising from regional infrastructure projects such as the Vizhinjam port and the ongoing national highway development works. The minister indicated these studies will explore how KSRTC can leverage emerging freight and passenger movement patterns.

The IIM has reportedly submitted a detailed proposal that includes study materials and accommodation facilities. The draft MoU prepared by KSRTC is with the IIM director for final review, the minister said, and further operational details will be worked out in consultations between the two institutions and KSRTC management.
For Kozhikode, the engagement brings a prominent local academic institution into direct partnership with a major state transport utility. IIM‑Kozhikode’s campus, faculty and administrative resources are expected to host or facilitate portions of the programme, offering both classroom instruction and residential short‑term courses as indicated in the proposal.
No timeline for signing the MoU or rolling out the training modules was given in the statement. Likewise, the statement did not specify batch sizes, course duration, or the financial terms of the proposed collaboration. KSRTC and IIM‑Kozhikode are understood to be in further discussions to finalise these operational aspects.
Officials said the collaboration aims to be broader than conventional training, combining management pedagogy with technology inputs and empirical studies to build capacity across KSRTC and help the corporation respond to changing passenger expectations and logistic opportunities in the state.
