New road aims to decongest Gorakhpur, strengthen links to Lucknow, Varanasi and Nepal
Gorakhpur Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday inaugurated the widened and strengthened Green City–Madhopur Bandha road, saying the two-lane stretch would allow through-traffic to bypass the city and ease congestion for local residents. The project, he said, was executed at a cost of around ₹70 crore and forms part of a wider push to improve urban and regional connectivity across Gorakhpur.
Addressing a gathering near the sewage treatment plant in Netaji Subhash Chandra Nagar, the chief minister described the area as long-inhabited and home to growing educational institutions. He observed that the earlier narrow road impeded movement — particularly of heavy vehicles — and exacerbated problems of waterlogging. The upgraded 1.8-km carriageway includes side drains to improve drainage and reduce standing water during the monsoon.
"Commuters travelling towards Varanasi, Lucknow, Nepal, Siddharthnagar, Maharajganj and Balrampur would no longer have to pass through the city," the chief minister said.
Officials said the new link branches off National Highway-24 and connects Green City and Patnia with Madhopur Bandha. The administration is also developing the Rajghat–Habert Bandha–Madhopur embankment road as a four-lane corridor and has proposed a flyover at Domingarh. Combined, these works are expected to create a de facto bypass allowing traffic to reach Kalesar and the Lucknow route without entering central Gorakhpur. A separate alignment via Mahesra is intended to improve access towards Sonauli and the Nepal border at Sonauli.

If implemented as proposed, long-haul traffic — including vehicles bound for Siddharthnagar, Maharajganj and Balrampur — would be diverted away from the city core, reducing pressure on urban infrastructure.

Officials said the work is one among several ongoing projects in the district intended to bolster civic amenities and streamline vehicular movement; detailed timelines for the four-laning and flyover proposals were not announced at the ceremony.
