The Mississauga Symphony Orchestra (MSO) is adding a new, intimate dimension to its season with a Chamber Orchestra Series staged in the Studio Theatre at the Living Arts Centre. The series comprises two concerts designed to bring audiences physically closer to the music and the musicians, with programmes that mix well-known repertoire and live commentary from the orchestra’s artistic leadership.
Smaller venue, closer experience
The Studio Theatre seats about 250 people, creating an environment where listeners are "just steps away from the musicians," according to the MSO. The smaller scale allows the orchestra to present works in a chamber setting and to offer commentary from Maestro Denis Mastromonaco and MSO players, which the organisation says will deepen the concert experience for both new and veteran concertgoers.
"The Studio Theatre allows us to offer a premium artistic experience at an accessible price, welcome new audiences, and bring something distinctive to Mississauga," said Claudine LaRochelle, Executive Director of the Mississauga Symphony Orchestra.
The first concert in the series, billed as The Art of the String Orchestra, is scheduled for Saturday, September 26. Its programme spans baroque, classical and romantic repertoire with selections intended to showcase the tonal and expressive range of a string ensemble.
- Featured repertoire on Sept. 26 includes movements and selections by Bach, Vivaldi, Mozart, Dvořák, Holst and Barber.
- The second Chamber Orchestra concert, The Art of the Chamber Orchestra, is scheduled for Saturday, June 19, 2027, with works by Gabrieli, Bach, Mozart, Dvořák, Ravel and Stravinsky.
- The MSO will continue its regular season programming, including Masterworks and Pops series concerts.
Programme highlights and season context
For The Art of the String Orchestra, the MSO has selected material that moves from energetic baroque and classical pieces to more expansive, emotionally resonant string writing. The advertised selections include movements from Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos, the first movement of Vivaldi’s Autumn, Mozart’s Eine kleine Nachtmusik, Dvořák’s Serenade for Strings, Holst’s St. Paul’s Suite and Barber’s Adagio for Strings. Artistic Director and Conductor Denis Mastromonaco said the programme demonstrates the many expressive possibilities of the string orchestra, from energetic textures to warm lyricism and emotional depth.
The Chamber Orchestra Series is positioned alongside other MSO offerings for the season. The regular concert series is set to begin on Oct. 17 with a programme that pairs Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 — to be performed by soloist Roman Rabinovich — with Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra. Another notable presentation, The Art of the Mediterranean, on Nov. 22 will feature guitarist Daniel Bolshoy in Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez.

Local cultural impact
For Mississauga’s cultural landscape, the new Chamber Orchestra Series is a strategic effort to diversify concert formats and to make orchestral music accessible in a more intimate setting. Presenting chamber-form programmes at a lower-capacity venue can attract patrons who prefer a closer sightline to performers and a conversational concert format that includes commentary. By positioning these concerts alongside larger Masterworks and Pops events, the MSO is broadening opportunities for residents to engage with classical music on different terms.
Details on ticketing and pricing were not included in the announcement. The MSO has emphasised the series’ dual aim of artistic quality and accessibility; the smaller venue and curated programmes are intended to appeal to newcomers as well as long-time subscribers.
The addition of a Chamber Orchestra Series underlines the MSO’s ongoing role in Mississauga’s performing arts scene, using both large and small venues at the Living Arts Centre to reach varied audiences while continuing to feature guest soloists and a broad seasonal programme.
