Early-season errors cost Kendal as heavy defeat follows home draw
Kendal Town’s search for early momentum in Northern League Division One has stalled. The Mintcakes picked up one point from two games this week — a 1-1 draw at home to Whitley Bay followed by a 4-1 defeat at league leaders Bishop Auckland — leaving them second from bottom in the table.
"Individual mistakes and missed opportunities continue to be the main theme for Kendal Town"
The Westmorland Flooring Stadium hosted Friday night’s encounter with Whitley Bay. Kendal took the lead after 21 minutes when Matty Clarke headed home, but the conditions worsened as the game wore on and the visitors levelled two minutes into the second half through Alfie Livermore. Kendal had a late chance to snatch victory when Joe Wilkinson’s injury-time effort was dragged wide from close range, and the points were shared.
Just three nights later Kendal travelled to face a side top of the table and full of confidence. Bishop Auckland looked dangerous from the off and came close inside the opening minute, striking the crossbar. Kendal steadied and created opportunities of their own, with Wilkinson delivering a cross that was cut out and later chances from D J Taylor and Jason Walkers kept alive their hopes of a comeback.
However, the match was decided by an eight-minute collapse in the first half. Bishop Auckland scored three times in quick succession: Luke Williams opened the scoring with a low finish into the bottom corner; Ben Jordison turned home from a cross; and Craig Moody made it 3-0 from another delivered ball into the box. Kendal did respond in the second half but were unable to mount a meaningful fightback, and Gary Martin struck on 80 minutes to make it 4-0 before the visitors grabbed a consolation.
| Match | Score | Venue |
|---|---|---|
| Kendal v Whitley Bay | 1-1 | Westmorland Flooring Stadium |
| Bishop Auckland v Kendal | 4-1 | Bishop Auckland |
Managerial decisions and individual performances will now come under close scrutiny as Kendal attempt to arrest a worrying run. The source of the problem is clear from the two fixtures: missed chances in front of goal and lapses at the back that gifted the opposition simple openings.
- Scoring: Matty Clarke provided the club’s lone goal at home, while Kendal were unable to convert a string of second-half chances at Bishop Auckland.
- Defending: Three goals conceded inside eight minutes proved decisive in the away defeat and exposed frailties from set-pieces and crosses.
- Goalkeeper: Matt Bailey was beaten four times at Bishop Auckland, including the late strike that sealed the result.
There were personal contributions worth noting. Joe Wilkinson created chances in both matches and came close to securing a late winner against Whitley Bay. D J Taylor and Jason Walkers tested the Bishop Auckland keeper after the interval, indicating the team did not surrender despite the scoreline.
But results matter, and Kendal’s current position — second from bottom after the opening matches — increases pressure on players and staff. The narrow home draw followed by a heavy defeat leaves Kendal with work to do on both ends of the pitch: finding a reliable source of goals while tightening up defensively to avoid conceding in quick succession.
Supporters will be looking for immediate improvement as the fixture list continues. If the Mintcakes are to climb out of trouble, they will need to convert chances when they come and eliminate the lapses that allowed Bishop Auckland to build a rapid and decisive lead. For now, the early season leaves Kendal with questions that must be answered on the training ground and in the next run of league fixtures.
