Chester Zoo has confirmed the return of its Lanterns & Light winter trail with a redesigned route, fresh installations and — for the first time — two adults-only evenings aimed at offering a child-free festive night out.
When and what to expect
The lights trail will run for 42 nights, opening from 13 November 2026 and closing on 3 January 2027. Organisers say the event will again transform the zoo after dark with wildlife-themed displays, illuminated features and performers bringing an expanded cast of life-sized animal puppets to the trail.
| Dates | Key additions |
|---|---|
| 13 Nov 2026 – 3 Jan 2027 | New animals (parrots, dolphins, giant polar bear), Suspended Jellyfish, mirrored disco tunnel |
| 19 Nov & 8 Dec 2026 | Adults-only evenings |
What’s new this year
The 2026 trail has been reworked to include a number of new visual and interactive features. Among them are:
- life-sized animal puppets featuring parrots, dolphins and a giant polar bear
- the Suspended Jellyfish underwater display and a mirrored disco tunnel
- a glittering pea-lit canopy and a Floating Feathers installation
- returning favourites such as the walk-through Cathedral of Light and the Fire Garden
In addition to the illuminated route, visitors will have access to seasonal extras including marshmallow fire pits, festive food and drinks, a funfair at the zoo entrance and an opportunity to see Father Christmas in a snowy setting.
Adults-only nights and partnership details
For the first time the trail will host two adults-only evenings — 19 November and 8 December — giving grown-ups a chance to view the displays without children in attendance. The event is produced by Chester Zoo in partnership with Sony Music and Culture Creative.
“There’s something very special about seeing Chester Zoo transformed after dark and we can’t wait to welcome families, friends, and, for the first time, adults looking for a festive night out without the kids.”
The quote above was provided by Gemma Wright, head of Guest Experience at Chester Zoo, who said the team had listened to visitor feedback when redesigning the route and selecting which installations to bring back.
Local context and likely impact
The Lanterns & Light trail has become a regular feature of the region’s festive calendar, attracting large numbers: organisers report that more than 140,000 people visited the trail in 2025. That scale of visitor traffic has implications for local transport, hospitality and retail in Chester, particularly around the city centre and tourism corridors.
For households and local businesses the event presents both opportunity and pressure. Hotels, pubs and restaurants are likely to see an uplift in bookings over the 42-night run, while roads near the zoo will carry more evening traffic than usual. The adults-only evenings may appeal to local couples and groups seeking an alternative to family-focused seasonal events.
Chester Zoo has previously used similar events to boost off-peak visitor numbers and support conservation messaging; the after-dark trail offers a chance for leisure spending to flow into the city over the winter months rather than being concentrated in summer.
Tickets, opening times and further details will be released by the zoo ahead of the autumn season. Residents planning to attend should expect larger crowds, plan travel in advance and check the zoo’s guidance on parking and access for evening events.
Chester’s long-standing attraction continues to tweak its offer to keep locals and visitors returning — this year with an added option for adults who want to swap mince pies and nativity plays for illuminated puppetry and late-night marshmallow pits.
