Alleged domestic assault in Burj Littan leaves woman and unborn child dead
Burj Littan (Ludhiana), September 8 — A 25-year-old woman identified as Harpreet Kaur and her unborn child died in a suspected domestic violence incident in Burj Littan village in Ludhiana district, police said on Tuesday. The woman was reportedly three months pregnant.
Station House Officer Kulwinder Singh of Sidhwan Bet police station said the victim’s husband, Jaspreet Singh alias Jassa, and his grandfather, Joginder Singh, were detained after the woman’s family lodged a complaint. The body has been sent to Ludhiana Civil Hospital for post-mortem and the exact cause of death will be established after medical examination, the officer said.
“All aspects of the case are being examined and further action will depend on the findings of the post-mortem report,” the SHO said.
Relatives of the deceased have alleged Harpreet had earlier returned to her parental home because of frequent domestic disputes. According to the family, Jaspreet had reportedly persuaded her to return to Burj Littan on the promise that he would give up drug use. They alleged that on Monday night he came home intoxicated, assaulted Harpreet and then strangled her.
The family said they found marks of injury on Harpreet’s body and questioned the initial circumstances surrounding her death. They suspect an attempt to stage the death as suicide and raised doubts over who brought the body down from the roof if it had been self-inflicted. The incident has provoked anger in the village, with neighbours and relatives accusing the husband of drug addiction and violent behaviour.
